Mujeres en Acción y Poder (MAP) celebrated its sixth year anniversary this month. Translated as “Women in Action and Power,” the women’s empowerment program brings Latinas into the life and leadership of the neighborhood. Participant-driven activities do this by building skills, knowledge and community at weekly meetings in the Powderhorn Park, Corcoran, and Standish neighborhoods. Important themes of the program’s workshops, as defined by the women, include computer training, English language, nutrition and cooking as well as aerobics and zumba.
Program Coordinator, Silvia Perez, describes MAP’s objectives as “connecting the community, cultures and peoples (pueblos). We want to make a difference (lograr el cambio).” Perez continues, “Participants become independent women with voice and ability.”
Successful events conducted by the Mujeres program have included annual park clean-up efforts on Earth Day, Mother’s Day celebrations on May 25 and a “Night of Peace” crime prevention event in February 2010.
A partner program called “Lideres en Acción y Poder” (Leaders in Action and Power) also is celebrating its third year. The Lideres program focuses on leadership development for both women and men in the Latino community.
