Cedar Riverside Youth Council’s annual leadership awards celebrate young people’s community activism

There’s a significant contingent of displaced African people living in Minnesota. The state’s Somali population is large and growing – in 2011, Minnesota had the highest numbers of any U.S. state. In Minneapolis, many of these Somali families live in Riverside Plaza, a towering housing complex instantly recognizable for its multi-colored walls. The neighborhood surrounding these buildings has suffered from a troubled reputation in the past, but young people are working to transform that negative image.
