The colossal doors wait to open as the water level is lowered at Lock and Dam #1, just downriver from the Ford Parkway bridge. Above (but not pictured), a public walkway allows visitors to stand above the two side-by-side locks and close to the adjacent dam, which was dry on this particular July day.
