It’s berry time, people. Finally. Strawberries have been available for a couple of weeks, and now raspberries and blueberries are popping up. You can certainly find these at most of the local farm markets, or you can find one of the many pick-your-own farms open across the state. This is actually a pretty fun thing to do, but a few words of wisdom: figure out which farm you want to visit, call them the morning you want to go to make sure they’re open, and go as early as you possibly can. Fields can get picked out early in the day, and if you wait until after lunch, you might be out of luck.
Another option is visiting some of the state parks and hunting for wild berries. The Star Tribune had an article about this in today’s paper, but it doesn’t appear to be on the website yet. It referenced Zippel Bay State Park, St. Croix State Park, Banning State Park, and Tettegouche State Park, among others, as good sources for wild berries. Again, it wouldn’t hurt to check with the DNR as to availability and any restrictions before visiting.
But go soon–berry season, as wonderful as it is, is all too short. Now! Fresh berries! For everyone!
