“When people talk about ‘urban’ anything we can have a lot of preconceived notions… when you see an image it can have bigger impact,” said Amy Wurdock, one of the contestants in the “In/Stability” photo contest sponsored by the Alliance for Metropolitan Stability. The Alliance is hosting the photography contest as part of their 15th year celebration, in order to document their achievements as well as highlight issues community members believe still need work within the Twin Cities area. The photo contest’s prompt, which was simply “Original images that display your ideas about what metropolitan stability and instability look like,” elicited 54 entries and produced a collection showcasing the power of perspective. Unfortunately it’s too late to submit your own photographs, but its not too late to participate. Last Sunday, September 20, the annual Czech Slovak festival was held at the historic CSPS building in St. Paul and hosted by the Sokol of Minnesota, an organization that seeks to provide education about Czech and Slovak culture. The community-led event, staffed by volunteers, was a wonderful mix of generations and families, all enjoying and embracing their common heritage. This festival, now in its twentieith year, included a wide range of cultural showcases from traditional folk dancing, cultural and traditional foods, vendors selling original lead and cut class from the Czech Republic as well as antiques and handmade jewelry, and the Sokol sponsored gymnastics team. September 16 marks the 199th year of Mexican Independence and Minneapolis and St. Paul are ready to celebrate! This important holiday commemorates the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence against Spanish rule and is celebrated by those of Mexican Heritage the world over. In Minneapolis, a large celebration is planned for Sunday September 13 between noon and 7 p.m. on Lake Street and 4th Ave South. This family-friendly event will include a parade at 1 p.m., running from Bloomington to 3rd Avenue on Lake Street, which is expected to draw more than 50 participants including dancers, musicians, and decorated vehicles.
