Open Call for Contributors

call for contributors

Want to contribute to the Daily Planet?

The first thing you need to know is our mission. Our mission to amplify and connect marginalized voices is very intentional. We believe the Daily Planet needs to be a space for people from marginalized communities to tell their own stories from their own perspectives. And for us, “marginalized” voices do not refer to obscure or fringe groups. Rather, it refers to the communities who have historically been oppressed in society and kept out of mainstream media, such as people of color, LGBTQIA, immigrant, indigenous, refugee, youth, differently-abled, feminist/womanist, ex-offender and low-income communities.

There is room on our platform for mission-friendly work that comes from allies to marginalized voices—and we welcome that. But such work needs to forward the conversation beyond the realities marginalized communities deal with every day. The Daily Planet endeavors to share stories that challenge dominant narratives, bring context and nuance to complex issues, and support and uplift communities in need.

We are looking for more contributors–writers, photographers, artists, videographers and audio producers–to join us on this mission.

What we need from contributors

WRITERS: 1000+ word articles including a narrative focusing the story, interviews, research and a nuanced perspective.

PHOTOGRAPHERS: Photos to accompany stories, photo essays.

ARTISTS: Illustrations and graphic art to accompany stories, portraits.

VIDEOGRAPHERS: Interviews, short documentaries, recording community events.

AUDIO PRODUCERS: Interviews, podcasts.

What’s in it for you?

PAY: Contributors to the Daily Planet usually receive $50-$150 per story published, depending on how much editing is needed, whether the piece was turned in on time and the length of the piece itself.

FREQUENCY: We are hoping to gather contributors who can take a new assignment every 4-8 weeks.

DOING GOOD: We believe Daily Planet contributors are doing something important for marginalized communities in the Twin Cities. We are looking for contributors who reflect our audience and mission. Diversity among our contributors is not just a decorative measure, but an intrinsic, intentional pillar of our mission.
