Beating back wicked winter, welcoming spring: American Swedish Institute’s Cocktails at the Castle

The American Swedish Institute hosted a bash last night that may have raised temperance movement activist Swan Turnblad’s eyebrow. Glasses of local beer and St. Germaine infused cocktails were raised and fires were lit in the Turnblad mansion yards. Rock music crackled into the night sky and Prince Hamlet, a Dane, roamed the house. Saints preserve us!

Señor Wong's: Don't fear the name, the food is stellar

I admit that I was skeptical when Señor Wong’s (111 Kellogg Blvd) opened up. I worked in downtown St. Paul at the building across the street when it opened a few years ago, and the name threw me. It seemed a little too kitschy, and honestly there is a lot of bad chinese and mexican food out there. Would this be far less than the sum of its parts?

Curran's Family Restaurant: Home of the $1.99 Early Riser Special

I drive by Curran's Family Restaurant at 42nd and Nicollet frequently, but I can't remember the last time I set foot inside the place. I'm much more likely to eat at one of the many immigrant family-owned ethnic restaurants a little further north on the Eat Street stretch of Nicollet. But what finally lured me in was the big banner outside the restaurant advertising their Early Riser breakfast special: two eggs, potatoes and toast or a pancake for $1.99, available from 6 to 8:30 a.m. daily.

More than a nosh: Burch Steak

For nostalgic reasons, I have a hard time being objective about Isaac Becker’s restaurants. Long story short: After moving here, my wife and I went to 112 Eatery for our anniversary, and we’ve now gone there every year since. So dedicated we are, we mark June 12 on our calendars to remind us that that was the day we could make reservations. So when we were able to get to Burch Steak in the Lowry Hill neighborhood, we were ecstatic and came away planning our next visit. But not for the reasons you’d expect.
