Union Park

Here comes the parade

Living in the Merriam Park neighborhood, my family has always looked forward to the University of St. Thomas fall homecoming parade which goes down Summit Avenue. We would bundle up and walk from our home down the streets golden with fall colors, shuffling through the piles of leaves as we went. The crowds along the parade route were always small until the parade—with marching bands from UST and area high schools—nears the campus. That meant we could take advantage of the free hand outs and candy from neighboring businesses, radio stations, and student floats in the parade. And we were always on the look out for St. Thomas homecoming royalty, cheerleaders, and the UST mascot, “Tommie.” MORE »

Assessing a Listening Session

Billed as a listening session, the Central Corridor meeting was actually a post-it-note brainstorming session geared to members of the business community and property owners around the Central Corridor Light Rail Transit (LRT) line in Saint Paul. It was not about discussing the pros and cons of the light rail line, and it was not a question and answer session. Rather, it was to collect information and data that will compiled into a report that will be given, unedited, to city and county officials, to the Met Council and to the non-profit organizations that are part of the partnership. It’s all happening at the Merriam Park Library

The Merriam Park Public Library is a popular neighborhood destination. In fact, with an average of 650 – 700 visitors daily, the carpet was worn and in need of replacement. The carpeting had not been replaced since the current library was opened in 1993. The library was closed for two weeks and recently reopened with new carpeting and new shelving for the non-print media area. Finding your favorite DVD, CD or book on tape just became easier because of the new shelves in this popular area. In addition to books, music, movies and events, there is a teen area and quiet study rooms available. MORE »
