Revenge of the SITH (Spirit in the House Festival)

by Phillip Andrew Bennett Low • July 2, 2008 • I spent much of the month of May writing about the Spirit in the House Festival, and continued my ambivalent struggle with the concept: what possible definition of “spiritual theatre” can be created that isn’t either offensively narrow or ludicrously broad? The problem fascinates me enough that I’ve written about it at some length.

Jeune Lune: RIP

by Phillip Andrew Bennett Low • June 22, 2008 • “It is a misfortune that Drama, an art fundamentally distinct from Literature, should so commonly be considered together with it, or as a branch of it. Among these misfortunes we may reckon the depreciation of Fantasy. For in part at least this depreciation is due to the natural desire of critics to cry up the forms of literature or imagination that they themselves, innately or by training, prefer.

Like Prometheus's liver, I regenerate

by Phillip Andrew Bennett Low • June 20, 2008 • Hey. My name’s phillip low, and I’ve written for enough blogs in the past two years that I suspect I could write these introductions in my sleep. Abortion: I believe taking away a woman’s right to abortion is taking away her freedom. There are diverse reasons why abortion is the best option. There may be rape; few people want a reminder of a traumatic event. There may also be financial issues; many women just can’t afford children. Additionally, women with weak emotional states frequently turn to alcohol and drugs and this dependency leads to abuse and/or neglect of her kids … If a woman makes this call, or wants the option to make this call, why do people pass judgment? Hard decisions are based on beliefs and if you make a decision based on what you believe, then everyone should both accept and respect your decision. — Sparkle Jones, 17, Humboldt High School MORE »

THEATER | Soap opera star returns home to Osseo to pull off a Christmas "Miracle"

Yellow Tree Theatre is a professional theater created in a space vacated by an Osseo furniture store. The stage was created by dropping black curtains and building risers on three sides for a small audience. Two months ago, with rehearsals set to begin, they suddenly lost the rights to their holiday show: Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. Three weeks later, playwright Jessica Lind, a co-founder of the company, had written Miracle on Christmas Lake and they were back in business. MORE »
