Anti-religious heterophobia: The rebuttal
by Daniel Cubias • 11/25/08 • One of my recent pieces (“Muy Fabuloso”) also appeared on the Huffington Post last week. The post was about homophobia in Latino culture.
Cousin #2: Escape and rebuilding a life
by Daniel Cubias • 11/20/08 • The emerald hue of his eyes is freakishly rare, especially for a Latino. Our grandmother teased him when he was a child, saying that he had stolen the eyes of the cat.
He is no good at hiding his emotions, so surprise or happiness or annoyance all dance on his brow whenever they want attention.
Muy Fabuloso
by Daniel Cubias • 11/16/08 • Let me give you a warning. If you should ever walk down the street of a major American city with my wife, you should not (by her own admission) listen to her she asks the innocuous question, “What’s over there?” I speak from experience.
Now what happens? Latinos and Obama, post-election
by Daniel Cubias, 11/11/8 • Can he transform “diversity,” Cinderella style, into a beautiful princess, instead of leaving it to toil in the social conservatives’ kitchen?
Here at Fanatic worldwide headquarters, we all want to know what the Obama administration will mean to Latinos.
No recounts are necessary
by Daniel Cubias • 11/11/08 • The dancing in the streets has subsided since Tuesday. Of course, I remain stunned that we had dancing in the streets at all. Seriously, does anyone remember this kind of orgiastic response over election results? Before this, the standard imagery was supporters in ballrooms laughing and waving signs, but now we see impromptu parades and ecstatic outbursts on street corners and strangers hugging each other in every city in the world.
Si se Pudo!!!!
Since 2005 Latinos in the United States have endured increased immigration raids, failed attempts at comprehensive immigration reform, vicious rhetoric from anti-immigrant politicians and activists, the sub prime mortgage mess, the economic melt down and increased racist violent incidents against Latinos throughout the country. In 2006 we marched in the millions against anti-immigrant national and local policies. In 2008 we voted. The numbers are not completely in as of this article going to press, but it seems that Latinos accounted for 8% of about 130 million ballots cast. That means that over 10 million Latinos voted in the 2008 election. The percentage of Latino voters in 2004 was also about 8%, but total votes increased in 2008. MORE »
Don’t Forget the Curtido
by Daniel Cubias, 10/23/08 • In a previous post, I mentioned that my grandmother makes the best pupusas in the history of Western civilization. It is best not to argue this point with me.
The pupusa, for those of you who don’t know, is more or less a tortilla stuffed with meat, cheese, and/or beans that is then fried. There are numerous variations.
Who do you love?
by Daniel Cubias • 10/18/08 • Why Latinos love Barack Obama.
In an earlier post, I talked about Barack Obama’s apparently insurmountable lead among Hispanic voters. This is a bitter pill for Republicans, who have eyed this key constituency the same way Homer Simpson drools over doughnuts.
