TCDP TOP PICK: Do you know Seitu Jones? If you live in the Twin Cities, the work of the visionary artist has touched your life whether you know it or not. Above is a cut-steel sculpture he created for the Dayton's Bluff Community Center in 2000; recently, he's worked with local youth to create artwork for the new Lexington Avenue Central Corridor light rail station. On April 25, Jones will be at the Minnesota Humanities Center to talk about a community dinner table he'll be installing over the better part of a mile along the Central Corridor line. - Jay Gabler

Last summer was Tomato-ville. What will this year bring?

Whenever someone on the Trail brings up a book, I check it out and usually try to find it and read it. So someone mentioned Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit, I quickly checked it out from the library. It was horrifying; I was appalled by the ethics, the chemistry and the economics of the tomato industry that were laid out by the author. In addition, it made me think about the taste of tomatoes that I’ve been purchasing recently. All of this led me to the decision that I really wanted to grow my own tomatoes this past summer.

Name these plants: St. Anthony Park Garden Club contest begins Feb. 1

On a late-November afternoon, St. Anthony Park Garden Club members quickly changed the concrete facade at the Como Avenue U.S. Post Office into a winter garden. Using fruits, seeds and other parts of woody plants, grasses, sedges, ferns, forbs and perennial flowers, they designed a display that will attract songbirds throughout the winter months. The Post Office staff has said many customers are also attracted to the “winter garden.”

As the back hoes come out of storage the community gardeners face reality – the hours of stooped labor, sources of water, careful labeling or indistinguishable seeds.
