Religion is already in politics. Now, the positive loving side of religion is speaking out and standing up for marriage. By marriage, I mean all marriage where two people love each other and want to make a commitment.
The theme is “God is Love” which is basically the theme of what is good. Truly, when religion goes bad, the hate emotions are expressed in fear, superiority, condemnation and force. The love emotions are kindness, generosity, support, listening and persuasion. The Spirit of Truth movement says
We are commanded to love – to love God, to love our neighbors, to love our world, and to love ourselves. All human love is an expression of the love with which God created us… The constitution amendment to prevent some people from expressing their love in public — including through marriage — is a human attempt to stop the expression of God’s love in the world.
As a person who is not aligned with any particular religion, I felt totally comfortable at the kickoff event. The singing was fantastic. The spirit of sharing and support is wonderful. The planned outreach includes video, Facebook, letters-to-the-editor, personal conversations, events and phone banks. As an experienced persuader, the guidelines for conversation are truly great and easy to work. It is a conversation with questions and personal story-telling.
If you have to go into the sticky wicket of bible, there are some great guidelines published by Spirit of Truth movement. This is my own version.
Being gay is well documented in human history across all cultures across all times. It is not in the ten commandments, and in the words of Jesus. Everything else in the bible is controversial.
And if the Christian Evangelical legislators really believed in taking the bible literally and if they really believed in the affair that has been brought to light, then they would be asking for death not a mere firing:
“If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife–with the wife of his neighbor–both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death.” New International Version (©1984)
Hmmm, double standard? It is obvious that the Bible is selectively interpreted by all. And since the Bible has had multiple translations with multiple writers, with some books edited completely out then that makes sense. Really the bible supports gay marriage because of this passage:
“For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” Galatians 3:26-28 (New Revised Standard)
Chuckle, I guess that means that churches of Jesus should no longer have bathrooms labeled male or female. Maybe the Christian Evangelical legislators so eager to mix religion and law could pass that law?
And so we can show that every Christian Evangelical Republican legislation is in trouble according to the Leviticus chapter of the bible:
“Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.” (Leviticus 19:27)
By the way, “in trouble” in Leviticus means sin which means death.
The sticky wicket of bible when taken literally can be quite fun.
