Opening weekend party

by Phillip Andrew Bennett Low | 8/1/09 • What is love? 'Tis not hereafter; present mirth hath present laughter --
what's to come is still unsure. In delay, there lies no plenty, so come and kiss me, sweet and twenty,
youth's a stuff will not endure.
The after-party for Friday supposedly had a Mardi Gras theme, though I saw only a few beads and masks floating about.MORE »

Saturday: Dance, discovery, hypnosis, Lieutenant Penguin, and one of the funniest guys around.

by Kate Hoff | 8/2/09 • Saturday, what a day…and I couldn’t get out of the house to save my life. The 1:00 time slot came and went, and then the 2:30…and after fueling up on an Anodyne bacon sandwich, I went to see You/Provoke/Me at the Rarig Proscenium, presented by Same Planet Different World Dance Theatre. I really loved this atmospheric, lush dance show of five different dances.MORE »

Hogg and the Humors

by Wendy Gennaula | 8/1/09 • Fringe Day 3, Part 1 We started our day at 1:00 with Hogg and the Humors. It might have been a tad too raunchy for my youngest who is 11(the promotional material said 12+). That said-he loved it. The show is part improv, part late night variety show, and part Fringe-for-All. It is like being a live studio audience member of an old time late night talk show. Hogg is a generous and natural host. MORE »

Friday show reviews

by Rachel Reiva | 8/1/09 • On Friday second day of the Fringe I saw three shows. Each show had its originality to it and overall it was a good evening of shows. Allegra Lingo: Crescendo Writer Allegra Lingo discovers that a small start can lead to a powerful end.MORE »

"Mansion of Dust" at the Southern—A view

by John Munger | 8/2/09 • Several weeks ago my annual Rabbit Show showcase at Bryant Lake Bowl featuring “Shows that Got Into The Fringe” was graced with the opening five minutes of Joseph and Sara Scrimshaw’s “Mansion of Dust.” Joseph does schtick in general, plus a phony French accent a bit better than Sara (whose accent is phony Swedish), and Sara dances quite a bit better than Joseph. But accents, schtick, and dancing aside, both move with extraordinary comedic skill and both are able to go over the topMORE »

Re: Trace at Colonial Warehouse—A view

by John Munger | 8/2/09 • Well whaddaya know? The Colonial is that rather upscale-ish renovated building across from the Monte Carlo restaurant and it houses Interact, a splendid arts organization. Ready At Will (RAW) Dance Collective is doing a site-specific piece in, beneath, up, down, around and outside this complex structure.MORE »

"Silent Poetry 2" and "Jurassic Dork"

by Wendy Gennaula | 8/1/09 • Friday: Fringe Day 2 We only made it to two shows tonight. I didn't plan on the lost cell phone, the dysfunctional ATM at the Science Museum of Minnesota, and the 25 minute wait to exit the SMM parking lot. Fortunately, the show we missed (The Frog Prince) has another show tomorrow that slides into the only blank spot in our schedule. MORE »

Mutant Squad

by Wendy Gennaula | 7/31/09 • Mutant Squad, presented by the Young Artists Council of the Youth Performance Company, is a fresh take on the "for teens by teens" category. Nick Clark's script is original and quirky. The plot has surprising little twists and turns. And the origin story of the Mutant is a hoot. Mutant Squad is a funny, witty comedy that never talks down to its audience. MORE »
