Rachel Dykoski, Writer

Rachel Dykoski (rachel.dykoski@mac.hush.com) is a burgeoning activist, wife, and mother of 2 oh-so-clever girls; she lives to volunteer throughout the region. “I am amazed that sixteen years after graduating with a degree in print media, this is the first time that I’ve been published in a daily news publication. Thanks, TC Daily Planet!” She has enjoyed freelance writing for community-based and disease-specific newsletters, has consulted on print production for health and wellness consultants and direct marketing companies, and was public affairs director for WRQC-FM. She serves on the Minneapolis Advisory Committee for Persons with Disabilities; the steering committee for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s myMSmyway.com; and the steering committee for Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota (regarding climate justice and green jobs initiatives). She is a DFL affirmative action officer for Senate District 61, a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church’s social justice and anti-racism groups, and a board member with the Alliance for Metropolitan Stability. Dykoski received certification in non-profit management from the University of Illinois at Chicago in June 2008 and plans someday to run her own non-profit. Her motto: “You gotta move it or lose it. MS hasn’t stopped me—if anything, it has given me my life back.”

Besides the articles below, Rachel Dykoski has a Daily Planet blog: Rachel Says.

What do you think about what’s been going on at JACC, in Jordan, and around the Northside? Tell us what you know – and what you think we should be covering.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | Background checks bar park volunteers
Minneapolis parks have recently tightened enforcement of rules about background checks for volunteers. But does the “systemic bias of the criminal justice system” mean that many African American males will be barred from serving as volunteers? We want to hear your ideas.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK | Hmong Freedom Celebration and Sports Tournament Coming up this weekend! We’re looking for community input about the sports tournament, your experiences at the tournament, how it has changed over the years, what the gathering of Hmong from around the country and around the world means, and any other thoughts you might have about the weekend.

MUSIC | Black Blondie and Foxy Tann knock 'em dead at the Uptown Pride Block Party

The Uptown Pride Block Party on June 26 was an LGBT Pride Week affair, but you didn’t need to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender to get with it. For that matter, you didn’t have to have a dime in your pocket. All you had to bring was the willingness to enjoy a damned good time. MORE »

MOVIES | Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in Public Enemies: Michael Mann doing what he does best: Austin Kennedy – I don’t mind independent pictures using HD video ‘cause they don’t have enough money for film, but when a major studio is making a multi-million dollar picture (and a period piece at that), shoot the friggin’ thing on film. No excuse! MORE »
