About me

Matthew A. Everett is a playwright and three-time recipient of support from the Minnesota State Arts Board.  His "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" drama Leave was #1 on Lavender Magazine's Top 10 List for Theater in 2011.  He's been keeping busy during 2012 helping spread the word to defeat the marriage amendment (well done, Vote No folks!) with a Minnesota touring show for Project 515 (which got an award for "Most Out of the Box Strategy" from the Equality Federation Institute), and his gay marriage comedy-drama But Not For Love, co-produced by The Flowershop Project and Workhouse Theatre.  Summer 2013 will be his eleventh year blogging about the Minnesota Fringe Festival in particular, as well as theater in general, so he should probably seek professional help.  Excerpts of Matthew's plays and other writings can be found at matthewaeverett.com

Review - Snowf**k - When nudity seems perfectly OK

Nudity onstage is a weird thing.  It can be treated in a completely clinical manner, to the point where the body in front of you doesn't even really seem human.  It is often treated as "shocking" - oh, aren't we naughty, look at this shameful thing the human body with which we are confronting you.  Ever so rarely, nudity on stage seems, well, completely natural, even comfortable.

There are times you feel like maybe you've failed somehow as an audience member.  This is what I'm struggling with as I consider Savage Umbrella's current production of Care Enough.

THEATER REVIEW | "Art" by Gonzo Group Theatre: Simple, unvarnished, and completely accessible

Friends can be lifesavers. Friends can drive you crazy. Friends knowing you so well can cut both ways. They can say exactly what you need to hear, or the last thing you need to hear in any given moment of crisis. Friendship, in all its complicated glory, is at the heart of Art. Yasmina Reza's comedy is getting a sleek, stripped-down treatment from the folks at the Gonzo Group Theatre. It's essentially just the actors and the words, putting the emphasis on script and performance in a way that plays to all of Reza's strengths (and the strengths of good theater in general).

If you're in need of a jolt of adrenaline in your entertainment, see the musical version of Spring Awakening currently on display from Theater Latté Da and the University of Minnesota Theater Arts & Dance Department. It's a welcome reminder of what sheer joy looks like on stage, and what a play can do to an audience when it's fully and vibrantly alive.
