About me

I like to know what's happening, you could call it a compulsion to be informed.  That's what draws me to journalism, I want to figure out what is happening in my community and bring that knowledge to other people.  Though I didn't take the most direct path to journalism, I think that's a good thing.

I started my career by writing for my high school and college newspapers.  At the same time, I was very active in activist organizaitons.  At Macalester College, I studied Political Science, focusing on Latin American Politics and Political Theory.  Learning Spanish and developing my writing were also goals in my college years.  After I graduated, I wanted to learn more about education, so I volunteered with Americorps as the program coordinator of a tutoring program.  That position lasted 12 months.  I now work as a Spanish interpreter/translator and as a journalist.  My background trained me in irreverance: I question most everything and am never satisfied with an answer.  I bring that approach to my journalism.

I try to get as much information about and as many points of view on a story as I can.  With each thing I learn, though, I find that there's more to know, and I set off in search of it.  Without deadlines I don't think I'd ever finish a story.
