About me

Yes! I am related to TCDP Arts Editor, Jay Gabler ... and I couldn't be more proud of that! He opened up this opportunity to be a citizen journalist. I appreciate living in NE Minneapolis and review what's happening around my community. I also enjoy reading the perspectives of my fellow citizen journalists and think the TCDPlanet is a very unique forum to learn about the entire Twin Cities. 

Favorite Places: 
The Stone Arch Bridge and Minnehaha Falls are my two most favorite spots in the Twin Cities. Any of the picnic areas by water are close seconds. My favorite coffee shot is the Coffee Shop NE on 29th and Johnson, followed by Moose & Sadie's downtown Minneapolis.
Activities: 
Walking with my dog, Hazelnut; volunteering with the Women of Today-NECH Chapter; staying active and volunteering with NE Minneapolis Arts Assoc.
Interests: 
Excellent food, interesting art, and fascinating people.

REVIEW | Morris Day and Doomtree take it all the way to five at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Summer Party

On Saturday, June 1, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) hosted its annual Gala and Summer Party Fundraiser. Photographer Meredith Westin and I attended the Summer Party part of the evening, which featured Doomtree and the now iconic glam-rock-era-Minneapolis-Sound Morris Day and the Time. The exhibition More Real? Art in the Age of Truthiness was the inspiration for this fourth annual fundraiser.

THEATER REVIEW | "River See" at the Pillsbury House Theatre: A good look at dance storytelling

The Pillsbury House Theatre is presenting "River See" by Sharon Bridgforth through April 21 on its mainstage. I attended the April 17th performance along with a packed house, so packed that some were invited to sit on stage. That was the first observance that this was to be no ordinary theater experience.

MUSIC REVIEW | Madeleine Peyroux enchants The Dakota Jazz Club

The singer/vocal enchantress Madeleine Peyroux performed at The Dakota in Minneapolis on Tuesday, April 2 and will do so again on Wednesday, April 3 with two shows each evening. If you can afford the time and the tickets ($50-$65), invest, invest, invest. What you'll come out with is a glimpse into song history, artistic tribute and interpretation that is stellar to the core. British singer/songwriter/actress Rebecca Pidgeon (with Tim Young) is the opener with a short song set including her Grammy nominated "Slingshot".

MUSIC REVIEW | An evening of blues with Keb' Mo' at the Guthrie Theater

Keb' Mo' (Kevin Moore), the award-winning, Delta-blues-influenced singer/songwriter, played to a crowded house at the Guthrie Theater on March 18. He's promoting his album The Reflection, which comes after a few years' break from recording (2006's Suitcase was his last album).

REVIEW | Paula Poundstone and Robyn Hitchcock open MPR's "Wits" season in style

Wits is a now-weekly MPR radio program. It airs live from the Fitzgerald Theater on Friday nights this season (March 15-June 14). If you can't swing a spring break to a warm climate this year, tickets to this gig would be a great alternative getaway. (Heads up, though, that some events this season are already sold out.)

A St. Paul girl returns to the James J. Hill House for a "Downton Abbey" Season 3 sneak peek

Since I grew up in St. Paul, James J. Hill's mansion has long provided a fantasy backdrop for how I'd hope to live...someday. (Haven't quite made it, but you just never know!) I, along with oodles of young gals, toured this landmark as a Camp Fire Girl; we volunteered to be "servants" during MHS seasonal events. As grade-schoolers, we'd tour the house and then be quizzed on the history of St. Paul. In high school we worked catering parties, getting a chance to investigate the more functional rooms in the house. We grew up passionate about F. Scott Fitzgerald and the gilded mansions of Summit, and learning about the legacy families that built St. Paul. We loved having opportunities to physically surround ourselves in history—especially "high society" history!

Move over, Mall of America: there's a new Black Friday tradition emerging for culture vultures in the Twin Towns. Museum stores are jumping into the mix offering unique seasonal shopping events on the day after Thanksgiving. Think of it as a “Cool-To-Wear-Black Friday”—we are talking museums, after all. The Minnesota History Center (MHC) and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) are both hosting big Black Friday events, with specials that go beyond the gift shops and into the galleries.

MUSIC REVIEW | Joe Ely at the Cedar Cultural Center: Something for everyone

Joe Ely, storied West Texas rocker, played at The Cedar on Oct. 23rd, 2012, a beautiful autumn evening that would have been perfect had the concert been at an outdoor bonfire. Minnesota's own Paul Metsa opened for his pal Ely, ending his heartfelt, bluesy set with a fitting tribute to the late Senator Wellstone. I've been watching Metsa play since about, oh, 1980. His stance, his strumming and his raspy voice continue to achingly reinforce his adoration of his music and the lifestyle that comes with it—interesting and soulful to say the least.

The Twin Cities’ own Children’s Theatre Company is now featuring the U.S. premiere of the National Theatre of Great Britain’s adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat through December 2, 2012. CTC’s production is the first time the story has been onstage in the U.S.
