About me

Alleen Brown was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her journalism degree came from the University of Minnesota. Her second language came from Buenos Aires. And her loyalty to frigid Minnesota came from a childhood spent in the shadow of the State Fair. Parents plead to keep charter school open at Minneapolis school board meeting

Parents of students who attend the soon-to-be evicted Minnesota School of Science begged district school board members at Tuesday’s board meeting to allow the charter school to stay in its North Minneapolis building. Their emotional testimony illustrated the uphill battle Minneapolis Public Schools faces in convincing families that the district decision to kick another program out of the beleaguered North Minneapolis building is what’s best for their children.

Retail janitors strike at downtown Target

Non-union retail janitors who clean Target stores as well as Kohl’s, Kmart, Sears and Home Depot called a 48-hour strike on June 10, demanding that the subcontractors for whom they work let them unionize.

Another North Minneapolis school program kicked out of Cityview

For the third year running, children attending school in North Minneapolis’s Cityview building are being uprooted. Minneapolis Public Schools plans to evict the two-year-old Minnesota School of Science charter school in one month, leaving the future of at least 325 children uncertain.
