EVENT: POOR PEOPLE’S MARCH AND RALLY
Beginning at Mears Park corner of 6th St and Wacouta St
Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 4:00pm
Led by poor and homeless children, elderly people, members of the Deaf Deaf-Blind and disabled communities, members of the religious communities, actors Rosario Dawson, John Ritter and Mark Webber, will march on the front doors of the RNC. EVENT: Second Annual Black Dog Block Party all-ages, free-admission, outdoor experience from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m., at 308 Prince Street on the corner of 4th and Broadway in Lowertown, St. Paul. Boots Riley & The Coup, Ill Chemistry, Junkyard Empire, Kill the Vultures, Los Nativos, and more to bring their sounds to the Republican National Convention mix.

On September 2nd 2008, almost 10,000 people will gather at the Minnesota
State Capitol Mall to engage in trainings, education, community
building, music and art in the name of positive social and environmental
change.

With the attention of the nation on St. Paul, RIPPLE EFFECT will go
beyond the convention and beyond partisanship to further the already
burgeoning global movement for sustainability, justice and equality.

Organized by Substance, a young nonprofit founded by three progressives
in their early 20’s, RIPPLE EFFECT will create partnerships with a
diverse team of local and national organizations to provide a catalyst
that will unite activists, engage youth and demonstrate positive action.

EVENT: PARTY FOR CHANGE!

Join us at the Party for Change, 5:30 – 9:00 pm, Tuesday, September 2nd, hosted by AM950, The Voice of Minnesota. The Party for Change will be the largest gathering of Progressive Minnesotans and Progressive Talk Show Hosts for a night of music, refreshments and entertainment during the Republican National Convention. Visit with AM950 talk show hosts Stephanie Miller, Voice Diety Jim Ward, Right Wing Tool Chris LaVoie, Ed Schultz and Team Fargo, Thom Hartmann, Bill Press, Jon Elliott, and our very own Mark Heaney! Your national and state local officials will also be there. The Party for Change is at Black Bear Crossing on the Lake, located in the Historic Como Lakeside Pavilion, 1360 North Lexington Parkway, St. Paul, Minnesota. Costs will be covered by $10 admission at the door.

EVENT: Tuesday, 9/2, MN Eyes Wide Open (the famous “boots” memorial) display will be at the MN capitol Grounds during the 2nd day of the Republican National Convention. The program from noon to 1 will include American Friends Service Committee Chicago office director Michael McConnell and former State Senator Becky Lourey. About 50 volunteers are needed. EVENT: Tuesday, 9/2, 6 pm, Tom Dickinson is organizing a “If I Had a Banner” presentation at the Free Speech Forum stage near the Xcel Center, St Paul. (The Peace Island Picnic slot is from 7 to 7:50 pm that same evening.)

EVENT: Tuesday, 9/2, 8:30 pm, “Support Our Oil Companies Rally” at a party hosted by Mississippi governor Haley “Offshore Drilling” Barbour, 510 – 1st Ave N, Mpls. EVENT: Wednesday, 9/3, 8 am (yes, am), join the CEOs of Big Oil in thanking the Texas Republican Delegates at their hotel, Crowne Plaza Hotel, 11 E Kellogg Blvd, St Paul. As CEOs of ExxonMobil, Chevron, CopnocoPhillips, Shell and Hess host a
party, celebrate the oily loot with Republican Party clothes, party hats, “Freedom Flags” (with oil company logos) and yellow “Support Our Oil Companies” ribbons.

Meet on the East Bank behind Coffman Union, on the West Bank outside of Rarig and on the St Paul Campus outside of the St Paul Student Center.

EVENT: Thursday, Sept 4: Youth Against War and Racism High School Walk-Out, 11AM
YAWR is calling for a walk-out by area high school students at 11AM. They’ll converge on the state capitol, and participate in a puppetry festival which will, among other things, arrest Bush and Cheney for war crimes. Youth Against War and Racism is calling for a massive student strike culminating in an antiwar festival and theatrical arrest and mock trial of the war criminals meeting in St. Paul.

EVENT: Thursday, Sept 4: Anti-War Committee, No Peace for the War Makers! March, 4PM State Capitol, St Paul
AWC starts a rally and march to the Xcel from the state capitol. This is billed as a “rowdy march”, and I don’t think they’re asking for a permit. They may try to take down the fence around the Xcel Center. Expect arrests. This is the evening that McCain accepts the nomination. No Peace for the War Makers! March, On Day 4 of the RNC John McCain will be declared the official Republican candidate for the presidency. He has said that the war is the key issue in his campaign. Stand with people from around the country to say NO! to his policies of war. We will rally at the State Capital and then march to the Xcel Center. Organized by the AWC.

EVENT: Peace Island Picnic

The Peace Island Picnic will be on Harriet Island, a St Paul city park just across Mississippi from where the Republican National Convention (RNC). Officially the picnic times are 1-8 PM, with the early hours used for setup. So coming in after work with your picnic setup would be ideal. No vendors are allowed in the permit, so people are fundraising to provide some basic food and drinks, to add to what people bring on their own. Activities include performance by some well known artists, sing-a-longs, artistic displays, kite flying, checking out the Trueblue massive TV screen and making a giant peace sign with people. This will be a pleasant event to end preceding days of marches, parades, bannering, Peace Island Conference and other artistic “UnConvention” expression planned for when the national focus is on the Republican National Convention.

Coleen Rowley has been on a huge theme of peace sing-a-longs. A number of well known musicans are also coming to perform:

  • Tao Rodriguez-Seeger folksinger and grandson of American-folk icon Pete Seeger * Larry Long, nationally known Minnesota troubadour, a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist and composer for the play WELLSTONE! * David Rovics, singer-songwriter know for work on political activist themes * Tuesday’s Robot, Minneapolis alt-folk band with a social conscience * Sara Thomsen, Duluth songwriter and singer known for a soulful voice, poetic lyrics and unforgettable melodies * Palbasha Siddique known for singing on Matt Harding’s Dancing video With 7 million hits and still climbing

Later in the day will be a “Sunset Peace Drum Jam” will be available to all drummers. Planning is still happening, so the list of performers and musical activities is still growing and changing.

EVENT: 9/1 to 9/4, various times and places during the RNC, the Peace Is Green Bike Brigades and the Pink Police on Rollerblades will following gas-guzzling delegate buses and circle their hotels and parties with bikes and rollerblades, pushing a green agenda and serenading delegates with peace songs, etc.

EVENT: The Border Cruiser
[from press release]Miami-based artist, Steven Gagnon is driving his video
installation, the „Border Cruiser“ to Denver and Minneapolis to present at both the Democratic and
Republican National Conventions to bring attention to the plight of undocumented immigrants.

The „Border Cruiser“ is a video installation in a former police car. Projected from inside onto the rear
windows of the vehicle is a Brazilian immigrant who tells his ordeal of how he entered the United States
illegally and the difficulties he faces once he is in the country.
