Art-a-Whirl adventures at Northrup King, Rogue Buddha, and Public Functionary

I’ve been pretty excited for the art events in the city this year, and Art-a-Whirl was by far my most highly anticipated. I know I’m not the only one who felt that way. I, along with four friends, planned about two weeks in advance with an obvious intention to see artwork but more of a longing to spend some much-needed time together.

MN VIDEOS | Art-a-Whirl 1996: What the first year looked like

Art-a-Whirl, now the largest art crawl in the country, had its start in 1996. John Akre was then a volunteer at MTN, and created a 40-minute documentary about the new Northeast Minneapolis event. He's now edited the documentary down to a more concise five minutes to provide this peek into the past.

Something's missing at the New Bohemia Wurst & Bier Haus in Northeast Minneapolis

I stopped by recently for a brat and a beer at the New Bohemia Wurst & Bier Haus, 233 E. Hennepin. It's a popular place, with more than 30 different local, regional, and foreign beers on draft and another nearly 50 different beers in bottles and cans.

"Victory" at Public Functionary: DZINE's past comes kicking and screaming—and glittering—into the present

I love stories that place emphasis on heritage. Folk tales, mythology, old family stories, and anything that contributes to the long yarns connected to someone’s history; especially if there are visuals to go along with that. THEATER REVIEW | Teatro del Pueblo and Pangea World Theater score with "Lorca in a Green Dress" at the Ritz Theater

Courtesy Teatro del Pueblo

Pangea World Theater and Teatro Del Pueblo’s cerebral and eloquent depiction of Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca’s life and work should have you running and barreling through the winter sludge to get to the doors of the Ritz Theater. Lorca in a Green Dress, written by Nilo Cruz and directed by Alberto Justiniano, is a beautiful homage to the Spanish poet and playwright.

Supermercado Latino: Foods of the Andes in Northeast Minneapolis

A sign on the window of Supermercado Latino at 2312 Central Avenue announces "Produtos de Mexico," but don’t be fooled. This isn’t just another neighborhood Mexican grocery store. This small and somewhat dark little grocery caters to those who grew up with the foods of the Andes and for those just discovering them.

Public Functionary: A new Northeast Minneapolis art space

Courtesy Public Functionary

I get invited to events occasionally, and while I pride myself on being a house hermit I try to get out every now and then to catch something new. This time I will be attending another press preview on the 18th of April at the recently opened Public Functionary for their very first exhibition.
