Two Daily Planet media partners win national press awards
The First Annual Ethnic Media Awards has honored the work of two Daily Planet media partners. Martha Vickery, editor of Korean Quarterly, took second place in the International Affairs division for her two-part series on North Korea (“The Power of Good Ideas and the Problem of Stuff” and “Snapshots from a Window”). Insight News’ Kali Terry was runner-up in the category honoring Best Youth Voice for his story “Crossroads: Hip Hop Meets Delta Blues.” The awards are sponsored by the San Francisco–based New America Media and will be presented November 14 at a gala awards dinner at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.
Media Alliance board member will lead World Press Institute
Doug McGill, the former New York Times reporter who has been instrumental in training citizen journalists for the Daily Planet, has been hired to lead the World Press Institute at Macalester College in St. Paul. McGill succeeds John Ullmann who is retiring after seven years at the helm of the 45-year-old organization, which brings foreign journalists to the U.S. for classroom training, newsroom visits, and a general introduction to the American news media. McGill is a charter member of the TCMA board of directors.
McKnight Foundation comes calling
Several TCMA board members and staff welcomed Sarah Hernandez of the McKnight Foundation to the Daily Planet offices Thursday afternoon. Hernandez was making a site visit as part of the deliberation process related to TCMA’s grant application. The group discussed the mission and goals of the organization and how they related to the goals of the foundation. Hernandez will report her findings and recommendations to McKnight’s executive director and other staff, who are expected to make a decision on the funding request by the end of the year.
