It’s hard to believe it's time for the Minnesota State Fair, but here we are. The Great Minnesota Get-together has begun, serving as a gentle reminder that summer is fleeting. Below you'll find a few engaging events around town to attend if you’re not quite ready to join the crowds at the State Fair.

Minnesota State Fair, August 21 – September 1

Will you try one of the 28 new foods at the fair this year? From bacon-wrapped turkey legs and beer gelato, to the Caribbean-style lobster rolls, there’s a lot of new favorites to discover!  Minnesota Gospel Explosion, August 23
If you like Gospel music, this spirited event should hit the spot! Presented by Jam with the Lamb Productions, this year’s Minnesota Gospel Explosion features local Gospel artists and praise dancers, and serves as a fundraiser for an upcoming Jam with the Lamb play at the State Theater.

Creative Dissent: Poster-Making Worshop, August 23 

Minza and Intermedia Art are sponsoring this event, part of the Creative Dissent, Popular Arts of the Arab World Uprisings touring exhibition from the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Organizers invite you to join in using stencils from Mizna's Arab Spring participatory art project.

#BelovedCommUNITY Celebration, August 23 

The third annual MLK Jr. Park celebration offers a full day of community festivities sponsored by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park Legacy Council. The festivities begin with a rally and a march from Sabathani Center (310 E. 38th Street) to MLK Jr. Park. The  event continues with the unveiling and dedication of the new Beloved Community Project, which includes a walkway, granite benches, a plaque and more. Live music, food vendors and kids' activities will also be on hand. Go here for more insight into this event.

Chipotle Cultivate Festival, 23 August 

The Chipotle Cultivate Festival rolls into Loring Park this weekend. Minneapolis was one of only three cities chosen to host a festival this year, a sure sign of the city's happening local food scene. The event features live music, artisan food, craft beer and wine, a Kids’ Zone, and chef demonstrations from Andrew Zimmern, Jamie Malone, Jack Riebel, Paul Berglund and more. Partner pop-ups like Youth Farm will be on hand, offering taste tests of youth-created recipes, and an on-site salsa challenge. Also, according to twincitiesfrugalmom.com, you can win a coupon for a free burrito, bowl, salad or tacos good at Chipotle stores, by getting your program stamped at all  five of the following exhibits: Cinema, Factory Vs. Farm, Guac from Scratch, Fresh Vs. Processed and the GMO Experience.

Lola Art Crawl Saturday and Sunday, August 23 - 24 

Billed as the “biggest little neighborhood art crawl in Minnesota,” the Lola Art Crawl, sponsored by the League of Longfellow artists, is celebrating six years of showcasing local artists in homes and shops throughout Greater Longfellow area. There are 60 art sites and over 114 artists participating this year. See the 60 art sites on this map to plan your stops.
