SOUNDING OFF ON SOUNDS | New Indian series at Pangea World Theater transcends language barriers

Splendid offerings by gifted Twin Cities based vocalist-composer Pooja Goswami Pavan, Piyaa Basey Kaun Des? (In What Land's My Beloved?): Songs of the Sufis on Blind Eye Records and kaise keh duuN (How Shall I Say?) on Innova Records are proof positive that you don't need to understand artform to greatly appreciate it. The songs are sung in her native tongue, Hindustani, yet delivered with universally compelling appeal.

An opprotunity presents itself in an ongoing series at Pangea World Theater to appreciate and learn something about Indian music, specifically on the various forms of Hindustani vocal music, directly from Pooja Goswami Pavan. It's a lecture-demostration of four workshops that's been held since April, continues Aug. 3 and concludes Sept. 13. This Sunday the subject is Kajri. a genre of semi-classical singing, is often used to describe the longing of a maiden for her lover and Chaiti, again semi-classical verse characteristically sung during the Holy month of Sri Rama Navami.

Accompanying will her husband A. Pavan on tabla (he co-produced with her Piyaa Basey Kaun Des? (In What Land's My Beloved?): Songs of the Sufis Piyaa Basey Kaun Des? (In What Land's My Beloved?): Songs of the Sufis and on harmonium Kedar Naphade, a leading exponent of the instrument. September is a performance of poetry by Indian saint and mystic poet Kabir (1440 - 1518) with Prof. Linda Hess of Stanford University interpreting.
