COMMUNITY VOICES | Northside music teachers inspire

Hopewell students gather after last year's Founders Day Funder.

The Northside community knows Jaette Carpenter and Ellie Fregni, both longtime music teachers and friends in North Minneapolis, well. Jaette, who has taught for 30 years, and Ellie, who has taught for 15 years, shared a long-time dream to establish a nonprofit music school open to all community members regardless to age, ability, or financial status. Finally, after years of talking and dreaming, the doors officially opened for Hopewell Music Cooperative North in April 2012.

Jaette and Ellie transform the lives of students through their passion of music helping them develop skills that evolves their musicianship and blossom into compassionate, caring young adults. Because of Ellie and Jaette’s dedication to providing high quality music education, Keys 4/4 Kids honored them with the Maureen Conway “I Inspire Kids to Believe in Themselves” award and a donation of $1000 to Hopewell. A Hopewell student told us, “Hopewell Music Cooperative North has helped me a lot because it doesn’t teach me play, but it makes me understand when I am using the heart to play.” That is exactly how music is taught at Hopewell - from the heart.

Since Hopewell first opened their doors additional teachers and administrative staff have been added to the team as the school grew from 50 students to over 100. Students can study piano, guitar, vocal, all woodwinds and strings, trumpet and trombone in lessons; Hopewell students as well as community members are encouraged to join ensembles such as the Hopewell Community Choir and the Hopewell Community Orchestra.

Now with their official 501(c)3 in hand Hopewell Music Cooperative North is dreaming big. Hopewell friends and family will be celebrating the second year of bringing music to the Northside community during the 2nd annual Founders Day Funder on Saturday, April 5th, 6pm at River of Life Lutheran Church at 2200 Fremont Ave N. There is a suggested donation of $10 at the door.
