Five die in North Minneapolis fire

UPDATED 2/15/2014: Five children died in an early morning house fire in North Minneapolis on February 14. Reports in the Star Tribune said the children were siblings, who lived on the second floor of the building with their widowed father, Troy Lewis, who is hospitalized and in serious condition. According to a February 15 email from MadDads, Shiloh Temple is accepting clothing donations for the family of seven living on the bottom floor of the house, who

"lost everything they have. Their home, clothese, pictures, and memories. They would like to say they feel so blessed just to be here and give a personal 'Thank You' to: The American Red Cross, Loring Elementary, Columbia Heights High School, Pierre Bottineau French Immersion School and the Minneapolis MADDADS."

"For details, call Shiloh Temple (612) 302-1463 or MADDADS (612) 822-0802."

The MADDADS email also said that donations for the Barret family (downstairs) are being accepted at BMO Harris Bank - 612-238-8700, and for the Lewis family (upstairs) at Lewis Children Family Memorial Fund at www.gofundme.com. A search on February 15 did not turn up any such fund — we'll post details when they become available.

Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS), the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers (MFT) and Councilmember Blong Yang also announced a fundraising effort to support the family:

“'This horrific incident is a tremendous loss for our entire community and I encourage all who can to provide support to the family,' said Michael Goar, chief executive officer for MPS. 'Especially in times of tragedy, our community must unite to support those who are suffering. I appreciate the leadership of MFT President Lynn Nordren for initiating this effort. I also commend Councilmember Blong Yang for his work to garner support.'

"Anyone can support this effort by giving a monetary donation. Please make checks payable to the MFT. We are also accepting donations of clothing, household items and toiletries to assist the family. Items can be brought directly to the MFT, located at 67 8th Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis or delivered to the information desk at the MPS Davis Center, located at 1250 West Broadway Avenue."
