Tumbleweed Vintage: From mid-century modern to upcycled antiques

Tumbleweed Vintage is one of the newest additions to the growing number of resale shops along Minnehaha Avenue.

It’s a collaboration between Toni Johnson and Jenny Bader, two women with a penchant for treasures from days gone by.

Johnson explained, “I’ve always been an old soul, and I’ve always liked old-school stuff. Also, I’m a photographer, so I started getting into vintage cameras and then everything else just followed suit.” She’s particularly drawn to mid-century pieces, and has amassed a collection of over 300 pieces of Pyrex bakeware. She had been selling these items on eBay when Bader approached her with the idea of Tumbleweed Vintage.

Bader’s first foray into retail was rather unexpected. She and her husband Shaun had owned a coffee shop in South Dakota, which she decorated in an eclectic, retro style – similar to the women’s clothing shop Anthropologie. Customers fell in love with her designs and, as Bader explained, “were trying to buy the stuff off my walls.” She added, “So I thought why not make a boutique? I started upcycling and selling new, used, and repurposed items and just became drawn to the vintage side of it.”

Shop Finds

Tumbleweed Vintage reflects the objects and furniture that both Bader and Johnson are drawn to. Furniture that has been given new life by Bader provide the perfect spot for vintage vignettes of 1950s housewares and decor. Old metal baskets house framed art. Wine racks morph into displays for vintage hand towels.

Creating a Shopping Destination

Johnson and Bader say that the welcome on Minnehaha Avenue has been overwhelmingly positive, especially from the shops that specialize in upcycled and antique items. When they were originally looking for a space, Ella Ritzman of E’s Emporium suggested they try to find a space on Minnehaha. A tight-knit group of shop owners along the roadway are working together to brand the area as a destination for all things vintage, and Tumbleweed fit right in.

Shop Hours & Location

Tumbleweed Vintage is currently open on the first and third weekends of every month. Friday 4-8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 12-6 p.m.

The shop is located at 3456 Minnehaha Avenue S in Minneapolis.
