We're hiring! The Twin Cities Media Alliance has just announced openings for a Community Engagement Editor, a Community Asset Mapping / Neighborhood Engagement Specialist, a Development Associate, and a Community Asset Mapping Internship. Details are listed below.

1) Community Engagement Editor (part-time):

The Community Engagement Editor will: 
*identify voices and issues that are important to diverse Twin Cities communities, and use the resources of the Twin Cities Daily Planet (www.tcdailyplanet.net) to bring them to a larger audience
*contribute to the development of the Twin Cities Daily Planet as a venue for community conversation and deliberation
*work one-on-one with community members to tell stories in a variety of alternate media formats (photo-essays, video reports, online interviews and resumes, etc.) 
*recruit members of those communities to participate in Twin Cities Media Alliance classes and training programs.
*share and support the work of other members of the Daily Planet editorial staff by assigning and editing and posting stories, fact-checking, adding links and formatting, locating photos, etc. 
This position requires a combination of journalism, new media and community organizing skills as well as experience working with diverse communities. The ideal candidate should also have excellent  public speaking and facilitating skills; the ability to create and maintain strong interpersonal relationships,and experience with social networking and online  community building. S/he must have strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.

2) Community Asset Mapping / Neighborhood Engagement Specialist (part-time): 

Primary responsibilities:

  •  to build relationships for the Twin Cities Daily Planet with neighborhood residents, businesses and business and civic organizations
  • to engage neighborhood residents and organizations in community asset mapping, identifying the commercial and civic resources of their neighborhoods, and assisting them in adding and updating information about them on the Daily Planet's interactive maps and directories.
  • to contribute neighborhood news content for the Daily Planet, in the form of neighborhood news notes, calendar listings, etc.
  • to enrich the content of the Twin Cities Daily Planet neighborhood pages by recruiting and cultivating neighborhood correspondents.
  • moving readers of the Daily Planet "up the ladder of engagement", encouraging them to register, create profiles and contribute content.
This position requires a combination of neighborhood organizing and socal media skills, as well as an understanding of journalistic practices and ethics. The ideal candidate should also have excellent   public speaking and facilitating skills; the ability to create and maintain strong interpersonal relationships,and experience with social networking and online  community building. S/he must have strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.

  The ideal candidate will also be able to support the work of the other members of the Daily Planet and Media Alliance staff with by doing some of the following: creating written, audio and video content and posting content to the Daily Planet website.

3) Development Associate (part-time): 

The Twin Cities Media Alliance seeks an experienced development professional to assist in all areas of fundraising and donor development. The successful candidate will:

  • Identify potential sources of support from foundation grants and earned income opportunities
  • Work with executive director to increase revenue from corporate and institutional sponsorships
  • Assist executive director with contact management and donor cultivation
  • Assist the executive director with grant writing and sponsorship proposals
  • Research and implement new opportunities for program and event sponsorships
  • Work with the the executive director to prepare grant and sponsorship proposals
  • Help the Media Alliance build relationships with diverse communities 

Experience required:

  • Familiarity with the local philanthropic community.
  • At least two years of professional fundraising experience, as well as familiarity with CRM software, such as the The Databank or The Raiser's Edge.
  • Experience with social networking and online community building.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with others.
  • S/he should also have the ability to create and maintain strong interpersonal relationships, as well as strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.

4) Community Asset Mapping Intern: 

The Twin Cities Daily Planet maintains neighborhood pages for all 98 Minneapolis and St. Paul neighborhoods - see for example, http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/neighborhood/saint+paul/macalester-groveland which have maps and directories of local businesses and attractions. We want to expand those listings - especially with more listings that reflect the cultural diversity of the Twin Cities, and we want to work with the owners of the businesses and attractions, encouraging them to take ownership of their listings and add their own descriptions, etc.

Responsibilities of the intern will include:

*exploring Twin Cities neighborhoods to find and photograph unlisted businesses and attractions
*contacting and collecting information from owners of businesses and attractions
*creating listings, and entering them into the Daily Planet database
*assisting owners in maintaining their listings (if requested)
*selecting listings to be highlighted on the homepage of the Daily Planet
*assisting in organizing 2 photowalks / month (starting in late spring.)

5) Media Skills Fellowships

Who: Ten people, diverse in race, gender, age, ethnicity and life experience, who want to learn and share media skills and expertise on behalf of their community.
What: Sharing and learning a variety of media skills, including basic reporting, use of social media and basic photo and video skills
Why: To use these skills for better communication in/about/on behalf of your community. Examples: building and maintaining a website for your church, reporting on your youth farm in TC Daily Planet, creating a video to tell parents about autism or hearing difficulties, setting up Facebook accounts for families in your building, etc.
When: Ten sessions, 6:00-8:30 p.m. (light dinner included), day of week TBD) over 20 weeks.

We will work as a small community that models and practices good storytelling and communication skills, with fellows contributing their insights and skills. TCDP editor Mary Turck will facilitate the sessions, sharing resources and information and teaching specific media skills. Participants will receive a stipend of $1000, with half of the stipend paid after the fifth session, and half paid upon completion. Participants will be expected to spend at least 100 hours on the fellowship.
