Minneapolis 4-H youth bring urban wildlife, Mississippi River and bike projects to State Fair

4-H is more than farms and cows — urban youth participate, too. According to the University of Minnesota Urban Youth Development Office, 626 youth are registered 4-H members in Hennepin and Ramsey County, and more participate through after-school programs. 4-H members have to win at the county fair level in order to earn a trip to the State Fair. Dylan Sauerwein produced this video for the TC Daily Planet.

Dylan is a 12-year-old from the Northeast Urban 4-H Club in Minneapolis. His project focuses on urban wildlife, including foxes and turkeys.

Amie Mondl works with urban 4-Hers in Hennepin County, and says that 65 Hennepin County youth are taking their projects to the State Fair this year.

Daqka Garane is 13 years old. This will be her second time at the State Fair, and she is excited about making a presentation about the history of the Mississippi River. She's excited because "I get to get the microphone and everybody listens and pays attention to me."

Sixteen-year-old Micah Gabrielsen is taking a bike project to the State Fair. He likes being able to spend more time with fellow 4-Hers and recommends visiting the 4-H building to see all of the projects.
