Hijab Day in Minneapolis brings "a different feeling" to Nicollet Mall

Dozens of young women fanned out along Nicollet Mall on Saturday, offering passerby a free scarf in return for answering a single question: “Why do you think I wear this?”  The young woman points to a scarf delicately and neatly wrapped to cover her head and neck; it is a hijab and is worn by many Muslim women. The women were taking part in Hijab Day as part of an ongoing effort to shatter stereotypes, lead dialogue and promote understanding across cultures and faiths in Minnesota.  The series of events, submitted by Fatuma Mohamed, is one of three winners of the 2012 Minnesota Idea Open Challenge III: Working Together Across Cultures and Faiths, a project of Minnesota Community Foundation.
