NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Pedal Pub Race: Fast(ish) and fiercely fun
If you don't imagine a Pedal Pub as a fast mode of transportation, well, you're absolutely correct. So a Pedal Pub race probably sounds like a joke, but that would be an absolutely incorrect assumption. The Northeast River District is putting on its third annual Pedal Pub Race this Sunday, June 10. The heats are three minutes long each and stretch from 1st Avenue NE to East Hennepin. Northeast Business Association President Nell Rueckl says this is the perfect distance for any sort of race, as spectators are able to see the whole thing from start to finish.
The last two years had a showing of about 30 teams, says Rueckl. With the capacity and time for 60 teams, Rueckl would like to see that number closer to 50 this year. Registration is available on the day of the race, so there's no need to commit ahead of time (summer is a busy time for Minnesotans). All that's required is eight to 10 people per team, four of which must be female. Teams are encouraged to dress up in theme, which is part of the fun not only for the people competing but for the spectators as well. "It's hilarious to watch teams strategize," says Rueckl who also describes the race day like a big block party. "When people miss it, they're bummed."
