Walker Community Church consumed in fire

Walker Community United Methodist Church was consumed by fire Sunday night. According to the south Minneapolis church's website, the building appears to be a total loss. The fire may have been the result of a lightning strike, although investigators have not given an official cause of the fire. Five firefighters were injured fighting the fire, one remains in serious condition Monday morning. A community meeting was held Monday, May 28th, at 9:30am, at the Living Spirit United Methodist Church at 45th and Bloomington, to discuss next steps for members of Walker church.

Walker Community Church has been the spiritual home for the Powderhorn Park neighborhood since the first cornerstone was laid for the building in 1909. The building was also the birthplace of KFAI Community Radio, and the station's first home. The church serves the community not only through spiritual services, but through charity, such as twice-monthly community meals. A community picnic scheduled to be held Monday, May 28th, will go on as planned, at the site of Walker Community Church, 16th Street and 31st Avenue South, beginning at 5:30pm.
