Marking progress—two years after the Northside tornado

Two deaths, dozens of injuries, hundreds of families displaced, thousands of trees lost and millions of dollars in damage. These numbers only begin to describe the effects of the tornado strike on May 22, 2011. Residents of Jordan, Folwell and Webber-Camden were among those most affected along the tornado’s 3.5-mile path, and it is in these neighborhoods where the storm’s destructiveness remains most evident two years later.

Governor Dayton signs same-sex marriage law

Today at 5 p.m., Gov. Mark Dayton signs into law the bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Minnesota. A large crowd is expected to watch Dayton sign the historic marriage rights legislation on the south steps of the Capitol in St. Paul. Barring court challenge, the law will take effect on August 1.

University Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis to be resurfaced this summer

Though inclement weather has hindered progress, Michels Pipeline workers were out Saturday, May 4 installing new gas lines for CenterPoint Energy. Xcel energy has also been working along University Avenue on service upgrades, to avoid tearing up the street again after the upcoming road resurfacing. (Photo by Margo Ashmore)

Art-A-Whirl profile: Open to earning a living making jewelry

When Rebecca Wicklund took her first metals class five years ago, she was on a quest. “I was always looking for jewelry that I liked and could afford. I wanted to see if I could make things for myself.” After learning the basics of soldering, drilling and piercing metal with a jeweler’s saw, she made her first pieces. As she grew in experience, she gave earrings and necklaces to friends and family as gifts.

Art-A-Whirl profile: Houseboat turning Art Ark

According to sculptor Zoran Mojsilov, an “Art Ark” is coming to Northeast for Art-A-Whirl. He said that when boat owner Cory Parkos, captain of a 60-foot houseboat, contacted him about participating in Art-A-Whirl, Mojsilov agreed to collaborate.

Open Streets coming to Northeast Minneapolis July 28

The last few times Central Avenue closed to traffic, it was for road reconstruction, the Celebrate Northeast parades, or to celebrate redevelopments happening. This time, it’ll be “to help promote environmentally friendly transportation choices, such as walking, bicycling and mass transit,” says a City of Minneapolis news release. “Open Streets events were also created to promote good public health by encouraging active, healthy lifestyles.

Measuring Minneapolis’ creative vitality

“Put ‘visual artist’ on your Schedule C [tax form] so I can count you,” said Gulgun Kayim, the City of Minneapolis’ director of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.
