NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Meet with GROWS this weekend at the Market
Have you noticed painted doors popping up in neighbors’ yards and wondered what that’s all about? Perhaps you’ve seen public art projects sprouting up throughout the neighborhood, or heard about Millie’s Peace Garden. If you want to meet the folks behind these and many other projects, join Corcoran GROWS for an event this Saturday morning.
Corcoran GROWS, a committee of the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization, began last year as part of the transition town movement. The idea behind the movement recognizes that our current culture, economy and lifestyles are possible only because we have had an abundant supply of cheap energy, and that the era of cheap, abundant oil is nearing an end. The movement seeks to help individuals and communities prepare for changes ahead and move from oil dependency to neighborhood-level interdependency.
GROWS has hosted many fun and educational events in the neighborhood, including public art projects, potluck & movie nights at the park, and conferences to promote sustainable ways of living.
The first of three meeting is this Saturday, September 17 at 10:30. You can stop by the Midtown Farmers Market for breakfast and shopping, and then join Corcoran GROWS in the school building at Lake Street and Hiawatha.
Corcoran GROWS invites you to an Education and Community Building event on Saturday, September 17 from 10:30am to 12:30pm at the public school building at 2225 East Lake (the Midtown Farmers Market site). Join neighbors for an interactive, educational event about peak oil and local resilience. There will be food, door prizes and a chance to see what Corcoran GROWS has accomplished in the past year!
"Brainstorming our Future!" Saturday, October 15 from 10:30am – 12:30pm at the public school building at 2225 East Lake (the Midtown Farmers Market site). Get ready to envision our future...what will life in the Corcoran neighborhood be like in 2030? Come with your BIG (or small) ideas and passion to this event to kick off our visioning process.
"Get into Action!" Saturday, Nov. 12 from 10:30am – 12:30pm at Corcoran Park, 3334 20th Ave S. It's time to make our vision a reality! Come help create new action teams to realize the vision we created in October 2011.75
