NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Johnstock Offers Something for the Whole Family
Tricky Troy's Kid Show will perform on Saturday
If you live in or around the Audubon Neighborhood, you may want to start off or end your Art-a-Whirl adventure at Johnstock. The 9th annual Johnstock, sponsored by The Johnson Street Merchants, is bigger than ever and offers a variety of fun for the whole family including the kids.
Before heading over to Johnstock, start the weekend off on Friday, May 20 at the Waite Park Carnival, 34th and Ulysses Street NE. The carnival runs 5:30-8 p.m. and will feature food, games, and entertainment. Enter to win some great prizes like an iPad and iPod Touch. All proceeds benefit Waite Park School and Local Parks and Recreation.
Afterwards enjoy a relaxing outdoor movie, Tangled, with the kids. The movie will show on the wall outside the Hollywood Theater. Bring a lawn chair and a blanket. Free cocoa and popcorn courtesy of the Coffeeshop Northeast will be available.
Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22, art vendors will display their wares in the merchant lot on the 2800 block of Johnson Street. Music from bands like The Unknown Prophets, No Man’s String Band and an afternoon dance party with DJ Riley will perform at various times during the weekend. Tricky Troy’s Kid Show will entertain the kids on Saturday, May 21 at 11 a.m.
You’ll find expanded kids game area in the alley. Mini golf, carnival games and a bouncing castle, courtesy of Castle Building and Remodeling, will keep your children entertained while you enjoy music and local arts shopping.
The children’s area is made possible with the help of the NE Urban 4-H Club, local Boys and Girl scouts and Learning Designs.
The City of Minneapolis and the Audubon Neighborhood Association are sponsoring a free open house and art viewing for the public on Saturday afternoon May 21 from noon to 5:00. Here is a chance to see the inside of the theater and view artwork created by Northeast public school students. Visitors will have access to the lobby, front corridor, and main hall. In addition, the artwork of students at Pillsbury Elementary, Waite Park Elementary, Northeast Middle School, and Edison High School will be on display at the theater.
You will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets to the upcoming performance of Waiting for Godot. The Theatre Pro Rata group will put on a live performance in the Hollywood of the play in July. Members of Pro Rata will be on hand during the open house to talk about their production and sell tickets ($14 - $41, sliding scale, cash or check only). More information at www.theatreprorata.org.
If you get hungry, enjoy food from the Johnson Street restaurants: Amici, Hazel’s Northeast, and The Coffee Shop Northeast, who will be providing easy, delicious food on the go.
