BOOKS | "Common as Air": A new take on copyright laws

Common as Air, a book by author Lewis Hyde, is a take on copyright infringement—an issue we have been dealing with as a society for centuries. Hyde is an expert on intellectual property, as he demonstrates throughout this book with his close attention to detail. His observation that the trading and borrowing of ideas is commonplace is something we don't think about on daily basis.
In Common as Air, Hyde focuses mainly on how we can do our part as individuals to give more respect and credit to artists—though he is deeply skeptical of current copyright protection, which he convincingly argues has been extended way beyond the term envisioned by the Founding Fathers. Although this is an issue that has been around longer than books, it is refreshingly interesting to get a deep, researched perspective on a topic that is often buried underneath other major political issues.
Lewis Hyde will be coming to the Walker Art Center on Thursday, Sept. 2nd at 7 p.m. to deliver a talk entitled "In Defense of the Cultural Commons." He will be discussing both of his books: Common as Air and The Gift: Imagination and the Erotic Life of Property.
