Convention season begins, with some metro legislative endorsing battles
Minnesota legislators retiring from their seats or facing endorsement battles should make for some interesting local party conventions in the Twin Cities area in coming weeks.
House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher, DFL-Minneapolis, is stepping down from her House District 60A seat to run for governor, and the DFL endorsing convention for her seat is coming up at 9 a.m. Saturday at Washburn High School in Minneapolis.
So far three DFLers, Marion Greene, Katie Hatt and Tom Nordyke have announced their candidacies.
Rep. Cy Thao, DFL-St. Paul, is giving up his House District 65A seat, and a candidate forum featuring the four DFL hopefuls who want to replace him is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Washington Middle School Auditorium in St. Paul.
Jeremiah Ellis, Rena Moran, Tony Schmitz and Jessica Webster are all seeking the endorsement in that district, which is also hosting a candidate meet and greet at 6 p.m. on March 2 at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center in St. Paul
The Senate District 65 DFL convention itself is set for 8 a.m. March 6 at St. Paul Central High School.
Rep. Paul Thissen, DFL-Minneapolis, another candidate for governor, faces an intraparty challenge from Charles Miller of Minneapolis for his House District 63A seat.
The Senate District 63 DFL convention is set for 9 a.m. Saturday at Richfield Intermediate School.
Sen. Linda Higgins, DFL-Minneapolis, faces an endorsement challenge from Raymond Dehn of Minneapolis for her Senate District 58 seat. That DFL convention is set for 8 a.m. Saturday at North High School in Minneapolis.
And Sen. Richard Cohen, DFL-St. Paul, is being challenged for his Senate District 64 seat by Don Arnosti of St. Paul. That convention is set for noon on March 7 at Central High School in St. Paul.
Rep. Karla Bigham, DFL-Cottage Grove, is retiring from her House District 57A seat, with DFLer Jen Peterson of Cottage Grove seeking her party's endorsement at a convention scheduled for 9 a.m. March 13 at South St. Paul High School.
