Art-A-Whirl profile: Open to earning a living making jewelry

When Rebecca Wicklund took her first metals class five years ago, she was on a quest. “I was always looking for jewelry that I liked and could afford. I wanted to see if I could make things for myself.” After learning the basics of soldering, drilling and piercing metal with a jeweler’s saw, she made her first pieces. As she grew in experience, she gave earrings and necklaces to friends and family as gifts.

Art-A-Whirl profile: Houseboat turning Art Ark

According to sculptor Zoran Mojsilov, an “Art Ark” is coming to Northeast for Art-A-Whirl. He said that when boat owner Cory Parkos, captain of a 60-foot houseboat, contacted him about participating in Art-A-Whirl, Mojsilov agreed to collaborate.

Open Streets coming to Northeast Minneapolis July 28

The last few times Central Avenue closed to traffic, it was for road reconstruction, the Celebrate Northeast parades, or to celebrate redevelopments happening. This time, it’ll be “to help promote environmentally friendly transportation choices, such as walking, bicycling and mass transit,” says a City of Minneapolis news release. “Open Streets events were also created to promote good public health by encouraging active, healthy lifestyles.

“Put ‘visual artist’ on your Schedule C [tax form] so I can count you,” said Gulgun Kayim, the City of Minneapolis’ director of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy. A bike route runs through it: U.S. Bike Route 45

This summer, signs will go up along the Mississippi River Trail announcing it’s newest designation – U.S. Bike Route 45. The nearly 3,000 mile interstate route begins at the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Itasca and ends at the Gulf of Mexico. According to maps from the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the route will run right through our backyard – just head down to the bike trail that runs along West River Parkway.

Hmong Minnesotans celebrate first annual Hmong-American Day in St. Paul

More than 400 people gathered on May 12 for the first annual Hmong-American Day celebration in St. Paul. Among those in attendance: community leaders, politicians, distinguished guests, and veterans, as well as families and children. The celebration was hosted by Lao Family Community after the State of Minnesota officially proclaimed May 14 as Hmong American Day. The date was chosen because May 14, 1975 was the day that General Vang Pao fled Laos and made the United States—and Minnesota—the home to hundreds of thousands of Hmong.

Between fifty and sixty community volunteers showed up on a cloudy Saturday morning to construct a mandala-shaped community garden in St. Paul's Summit Hill Neighborhood. The garden is located on park land and the goal of the garden's founders is to "empower people through organic gardening to inspire greater self-sufficiency, sustainability, and environmental responsibility."
