Tillie’s Bean opens Tillie’s Two on Franklin Avenue

Tillie's Bean is bringing on their daily fresh roasted coffee to the Franklin Ave area with their second coffee shop located at 1931 Nicollet Avenue South, on the corner of Franklin and Nicollet avenues.

Opening their shop in early August has been a hefty amount of work but nothing Dave (White Earth/Lac du Flambeau Ojibwe) and Maggie Turner couldn't handle. With Dave roasting the coffee fresh daily in Southeast Minneapolis and Grandma Turner handling the shop on E. 38th Street in south Minneapolis, Maggie has been in charge of getting the place ready for business.

When I went in for the interview there were hand scribbled signs on the doors and windows that read the hours of service and "Free Wi-Fi" written in black marker on plain white paper. "We're still working on some things like the formal menu boards, decorating, the flow of the kitchen, little things," said Maggie.   

High ceilings add to the spacious layout for friends, conversation, and free wi-fi.  There is also a quite nice comfy looking nook in the corner for reading or studying. Tillie's Two, or T2 as the Turners call it, is unique for its space.  The building is the old Acadia coffee and sandwich shop that catered to local artists and performers.  The Acadia coffee shop was part food and part stage, hosting spoken word and local workshops for youth and adult artists.  

The Turners have since removed the dividing wall which provides for much more space.  The stage is still set-up but "it won't be staying" says Maggie, "that area will be made into family seating".

A winter or so ago Tillie's Bean hosted Ojibwe Language and Craft night at the E. 38th Street. When asked if they would be bringing something like that back into the community the Turner's said, "We would really like to do something if someone was interested in Saturday or Sunday afternoon. This store has potential for so much, and nothing is set in stone."

Tillie's Two offers cold press, chai, breakfast sandwiches, and bakery goodies. And the coffee shop also offers table reservations for larger groups, after-hours rental, a large meeting space, and catering.  

Once things begin to fall into place the Turner's will set up rails to display local artists work for sale and  rotate artists every two months.  The artist display is open to anyone and artists are encouraged to showcase their artwork.

Tillies Two hours of operation are Monday thru Friday from 6 am - 4 pm, Saturday from 7 am - 4 pm, and Sunday from 8 am - 3 pm.
