Highland Neighborhood News and Events

Naturally bordered by the scenic and winding Mississippi River, Highland Park is centrally located in the Twin Cities and yet boasts it’s own small-town feel. The Village, a shopping district with plenty of restaurants, boutiques, and beautiful public gardens, is in the heart of the Highland Park neighborhood. Families thrive on the recreational opportunities with miles of park land, golf, little league, a movie theater and a newly renovated park pavilion. Walking quaint, tree lined streets to kindergarten or graduate school, the public library or church, or to The Village for its annual 3 day festival, Highlandfest, there's something for everyone to enjoy in Highland Park. Chaos, dreams and Tennis2College at Fort Snelling tennis center

It’s three o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon, and there’s something in the lobby of Fred Wells Tennis & Education Center (FWTEC) that you might not find at another tennis club: barely controlled chaos. Kids are streaming through the front doors, and the exuberant energy they tow along is almost palpable. THEATER REVIEW | "Chicka-BOOM!": BareBones does it again, only slightly less coherently than before

Last year around this time I attended BareBones Productions' annual Halloween outdoor puppet extravaganza, and the thing I loved most about it was the feeling of being a part of a story crafted with you in mind. BareBones puts great emphasis on audience participation and that’s what really gives the performances their weight. I felt like I was truly being led down a path of ghostly orbs into an afterlife inhabited by beings unknown. I didn’t know what to expect and that made the performance that much more enchanting; there was infinite room for outlandish and unpredictable storytelling.

Sadly, this year did not quite live up to my expectations.

MUSIC REVIEW | Joss Stone does Joss Stone at O’Shaughnessy Auditorium

Photos by Patrick Dunn

British singer Joss Stone brought her Soul Sessions Tour to The O’Shaughnessy Thursday evening as part of their Women of Substance series. The venue’s intimate feel and great acoustics make it the perfect venue for this high-quality music performance. Although Stone brought a large band with her (three horns, three backup singers, guitar, bass, keys, drums) the stage set retained a nice open feel leaving her room to dance and twirl about barefoot like the free spirit she is rumored to be. The backdrop made up of flowing crinkle curtains was nicely lit with mostly shades of blue and purple adding a warmth that assisted in creating the right mood for the tunes.
