Whittier is an active, urban residential neighborhood known as the "International Neighborhood." With more than 15,000 residents representing 30 countries and more than 25 languages, diversity becomes community in Whittier.

Ingrid Alm is our neighborhood correspondent for Whittier..Ingrid enjoys photography and journalism and loves Minneapolis. Her favorite places in Whittier include Pancho Villa, Intermedia Arts, Bad Waitress, Quang, Soo Visual Arts Center, The Wedge, CC Club and the  Jasmine Deli.

Reflecting its population, Whittier offers an eclectic mix of ethnic dining and shopping along "Eat Street" (Nicollet Avenue), as well as cultural and artistic experiences. Whittier is home to the internationally recognized Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the award winning Children's Theatre, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and other performance venues such as the Jungle Theater and Old Arizona.

In Whittier, residents have access to the amenities of an independent and colorful neighborhood while remaining minutes from downtown, with convenient access to the Midtown Greenway bike/pedestrian corridor and mass transit service. (Description from livemsp.org)

REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK | Forced to move

Carlos Rivera and Yosenia Rosales with one of three kids. Carlos works seasonally, and Yosenia works regularly. They have friends in the area and don't want to leave. Besides, "For our son with autisim, he knows this area. Everyone watches out for him. If we have to move now, he has to get used to a whole new place."

"We think this is how they do it," said Carlos. "We don't know the laws here."

The email to the editor started with a tale of woe: "A woman came to my front door this morning and asked me if I could rent her the second story of my duplex.  I recognized her as a friend from an apartment on Pillsbury Avenue, just across the alley from my backyard.   I asked her why she is moving.   She answered, 'We are all being kicked out by Mint Properties.'  She was the fifth person to tell me this story."

Minneapolis Institute of Arts' Art in Bloom doesn't bloom as brightly as the Como Conservatory or Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

I had been looking forward to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts’s annual Art in Bloom show since March. I’d never gone before, and considering the lack of spring we’ve had this year I figured it would be a great way to usher in the new season. As with most events that I anticipate with no prior experience I set my expectations ridiculously high.

THEATER REVIEW | The Jungle Theater's "Deathtrap": A "who hasn’t done it" thriller

A washed-up playwright, a supportive wife, an aspiring young playwright who has written a top notch thriller, a secluded location and a wall decorated with death instruments. These are the key elements of Jungle Theater’s production of Deathtrap, each harboring a clue to a mystery. While parodying the thriller genre, the play also effectively surprises and shocks. It is virtually impossible to share more about the play without spoiling the suspense.
