Southeast Como Neighborhood News and Events

Como

Como is a place of cozy homes, tree-canopied streets and delightful gardens, where people come and decide to stay for generations.

Como is conveniently located: halfway between the University of Minnesota's St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses and halfway between the two downtowns, with excellent bus connections to both.

Como has a strong environmental ethic and has participated in events such as tree planting, opening new community gardens, organic lawn care, building rain barrels, and a Solar Pilot Project. Most recently Como has been awarded a $120,000 grant to implement a Green Village concept that will focus on green transportation, renewable energy, and stormwater management. (livemsp.org)

The Southeast Como neighborhood is also part of the relatively new University District Alliance, with news and information in the University District section. The University District Alliance is a coalition of four neighborhoods surrounding the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus, the City of Minneapolis, and the University.  The neighborhoods are:  Marcy-Holmes, Southeast Como, Prospect Park/East River Road, and Cedar/Riverside.  In addition business organizations operating within the area, two U student organizations and Augsburg College are part of the University District Alliance.

Public Functionary: A new Northeast Minneapolis art space

I get invited to events occasionally, and while I pride myself on being a house hermit I try to get out every now and then to catch something new. This time I will be attending another press preview on the 18th of April at the recently opened Public Functionary for their very first exhibition.

MUSIC REVIEW | Frightened Rabbit loosen up at the Varsity Theater

Photos by David McCrindle

According to Sasha Frere-Jones, Neil Diamond’s voice has two settings: less Neil and more Neil. Something similar could be said of Scott Hutchison, frontman of the Scottish band Frightened Rabbit—his thickly accented keen can be less poignant or more poignant, but it’s always poignant. The band’s March 21 show at the Varsity Theater, though, had a “Song Sung Blue” quality to it. The songs were sad, but the mood was buoyant.
