Field Regina Northrop is conveniently located less than 5 miles from downtown Minneapolis just east of 35W, roughly midway between Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis. Our neighborhood is bordered to the south by Minnehaha Creek, along which runs a path for walking, running, in-line skating or biking. The business district at 48th and Chicago is home to restaurants ranging from Mexican to Sushi and businesses ranging from hardware to tennis supplies. McRae Park and Recreation Center is the focal point for a number of youth activities; and in the spring the park serves as the location where the neighborhood holds a festival to celebrate the diversity of its residents

SATURDAY PICK | "Minnecanos" for the bilingual and monolingual alike

Minnecanos just opened last weekend at the Parkway Theater, but tonight is the last chance to catch the hour-long touring production that strives to enlighten Minnesotans of the strong Chicano presence in the Twin Cities. Mixed Blood introduced Minnecanos to its repertoire back in 1994 and the show has been around ever since. The production has evolved since then, now longer to incorporate modern issues and also the projection of both English and Spanish supertitles. If you haven't already taken advantage of Mixed Blood's Radical Hospitality initiative (free admission, based on availability), Minnecanos is a good place to start—not only for its important cultural history lesson, but for the relevance of the topic today in understanding our city.MORE »

FRIDAY PICK | Gary Busey plays Buddy Holly at the Parkway Theater

See video

Gary Busey's Oscar-nominated performance as the eponymous subject of The Buddy Holly Story (1978) was a breakout role for the young actor, who went on to earn a stranger but more lasting fame when a series of legal wrangles made him one of Hollywood's favorite punchlines—a role he's more or less embraced. Now those Buddy Holly hornrims are back in style, and Busey will take the stage tonight—the 53rd anniversary of Holly's untimely death—at the Parkway Theater to introduce a screening of The Buddy Holly Story and then, after the movie, play a few of Holly's greatest hits with the house band from the History Theatre's Ivey-winning stage production of the Holly story.
