SATURDAY PICK | Serious fun at the Washburn A Mill Tour
Chances are you dig these cities we live in; and there's a lot to like too. The Mill City complex, situated in the scenic part of downtown, is definitely one reason, and is as historic as it is beautiful ... and also highly photographed. It's no coincidence that the old mill is situated on the Mississippi RIver—that river being the energy source that brought work and people up north to Minnesota. The Washburn A Mill Tour takes you on a guided walkabout of the building—the only opportunity of its kind, actually. I know it sounds like a glorified grade school field trip, but it's more than just a history lesson. I took my sister to "visit the most explosive museum in the world" last spring and we both still talk about how much random weird fun we had. When else are you going to get to take a picture with a giant box of Bisquick?MORE »
SATURDAY PICK | May Lee-Yang, Brian Beatty, Andy Sturdevant, and others have "FLO(we){u}R Power" at the Soap Factory

I know it's petty, but as an editor, sometimes the name of an event is so obnoxious that you feel like you can hardly write about it and still take yourself seriously. Such has been the case with the Soap Factory's exhibit named—sigh—FLO(we){u}R, an installation in which artists Amber Ginsberg and Joseph Madrigal recreate a WWI bomb factory to build seed bombs. (Sometimes a concept is just too hippie even for the Daily Planet.) But Allison Morse snared me with the TalkingImageConnection (speaking of awkward names, Pat, can I buy a space?) reading scheduled for May 12 with local luminaries including irreverent Fringe favorites May Lee-Yang and Brian Beatty as well as the happily ubiquitous Andy Sturdevant. Dig out those cut-offs and paisley and groove on down to Marcy-Holmes for this free event.MORE »

MONDAY PICK | Open newsroom happy hour at the Kitty Cat Klub is the word

The Twin Cities Daily Planet has been deepening its coverage of the University District neighborhoods and, as always, is looking to its community members to share their news, stories, and ideas. On Monday, May 14 at the Kitty Cat Klub (situated conveniently in the University area) is a chance to meet with arts editor Jay Gabler to do just that and discuss ways you can get involved in the intiative. It's also a chance to wind down with a drink at the start of the week and just chat about "local life" with fellow writers. Cheers to news and booze.MORE »
Carp could close St. Anthony Lock

Some fish don’t play well with others, and one of them—potentially one single fish— might soon close the gate on the entire upper Mississippi River (north of St. Anthony Falls).
The fish itself won’t do the closing, and people (and other fish) will still be able to use the upper river.MORE »
