Marcy Holmes Neighborhood News and Events

The city's "first neighborhood" is now one of its hottest.

Quiet, nature-filled streets by day, an urban entertainment scene by night, Marcy-Holmes is a welcome mix of old and new, traditional and trendy. Conveniently located between downtown Minneapolis and the University of MN along the Mississippi River, you'll find many small shops, as well as an array of nationally recognized restaurants and art galleries here. Marcy Open School, a student-centered K-8 school that encourages learning through the arts, draws many great families to the neighborhood as well. (livemsp.org)

The Marcy-Holmes neighborhood is also part of the relatively new University District Alliance, with news and information in the University District section. The University District Alliance is a coalition of four neighborhoods surrounding the University of Minnesota's Minneapolis campus, the City of Minneapolis, and the University. The neighborhoods are:  Marcy-Holmes, Southeast Como, Prospect Park/East River Road, and Cedar/Riverside.  In addition business organizations operating within the area, two U student organizations and Augsburg College are part of the University District Alliance.

For detailed demographic information, see the neighborhood profile from Minnesota Compass.

SATURDAY PICK | May Lee-Yang, Brian Beatty, Andy Sturdevant, and others have "FLO(we){u}R Power" at the Soap Factory

I know it's petty, but as an editor, sometimes the name of an event is so obnoxious that you feel like you can hardly write about it and still take yourself seriously. Such has been the case with the Soap Factory's exhibit named—sigh—FLO(we){u}R, an installation in which artists Amber Ginsberg and Joseph Madrigal recreate a WWI bomb factory to build seed bombs. (Sometimes a concept is just too hippie even for the Daily Planet.) But Allison Morse snared me with the TalkingImageConnection (speaking of awkward names, Pat, can I buy a space?) reading scheduled for May 12 with local luminaries including irreverent Fringe favorites May Lee-Yang and Brian Beatty as well as the happily ubiquitous Andy Sturdevant. Dig out those cut-offs and paisley and groove on down to Marcy-Holmes for this free event.

MONDAY PICK | Open newsroom happy hour at the Kitty Cat Klub is the word

The Twin Cities Daily Planet has been deepening its coverage of the University District neighborhoods and, as always, is looking to its community members to share their news, stories, and ideas. On Monday, May 14 at the Kitty Cat Klub (situated conveniently in the University area) is a chance to meet with arts editor Jay Gabler to do just that and discuss ways you can get involved in the intiative. It's also a chance to wind down with a drink at the start of the week and just chat about "local life" with fellow writers. Cheers to news and booze.

Carp could close St. Anthony Lock

This U.S. Fish and Wildlife photo from the Illinois River shows silver carp jumping when startled. The flying fish can cause accidents, and the various types of carp starve out native species by eating all their food.

Some fish don’t play well with others, and one of them—potentially one single fish— might soon close the gate on the entire upper Mississippi River (north of St. Anthony Falls).

MONDAY PICK | Justin Townes Earle lets loose at the Varsity Theater

Country music's tepid ballads about family loyalty can cloy, but the genre does fare better than most in creating multi-generation dynasties: the Carter-Cash family, the three Hanks, even Jeff and Spencer Tweedy. At 30, Justin Townes Earle has already struggled long and hard with the demons his dad Steve notoriously overcame: rehab, arrests, drama with his own kids and ex-lovers. Is this the sunny side for Justin Townes Earle? Yes or no, he'll be at the Varsity on May 7 with all his dangerous charm. If you're seeing him for the first time, it might scare you: he's a man, and he knows how to do things.
