Kingfield is largely a residential area of single-family houses with some multiple unit residences and apartment buildings that sit on tree-lined streets. There are several commercial corners with businesses to serve the residents of Kingfield with a variety of goods and services. The Kingfield neighborhood has a reputation as a place where the people are willing to volunteer to create and maintain a vital, caring and safe place for those who live and work here.  The neighborhood hosts a summer Farmer's Market and an annual art show. Kingfield is well served by bike lanes and public transit and has easy connections to downtown and the rest of the region via I-35W. (Description from livemsp.org)

COMMUNITY VOICES | Embedded: With the Mosaic Quilting Project in Minneapolis's Kingfield neighborhood

A volunteer adds a piece of cut glass to a mosaic-in-process. The glass pieces are glued onto a fiberglass mesh backing. Later the mesh will be attached with mortar to a firm backing board. Come see the "glass quilts" unveiled at ML King Park (40th & Nicollet Ave. S., Minneapolis) on Saturday, April 27, at 1–2:30 PM. Photo by Francesca Davis DiPiazza.

I am not the craft-making type. I am a klutz, with an X-Acto blade scar on my thigh to prove it.

Minneapolis mayoral candidates get into nitty gritty differences in second debate

Full debate - thanks to The Uptake!

Things heated up in the mayor’s race on Wednesday, April 3 at Solomon’s Porch, a nonprofit Christian center in South Minneapolis. There were two additions from the debate last week, when Don Samuels, Jackie Cherryhomes, Gary Schiff, Betsy Hodges and Mark Andrew debated at the Humphrey School, vying for the DFL endorsement. The April 3 debate, hosted by the League of Women Voters, included Cam Winton, a conservative candidate who’s running as an independent, and Jim Thomas, a Minneapolis Public Schools teacher. The candidates sat in comfy armchairs in the densely packed room (I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a code violation with how many people were crammed on the balcony) and got into the nitty gritty of where they differ on the issues.

Minneapolis date nights at Mona Restaurant and the Grand Cafe

Mona shrimp on brioche

Thursday is Valentine's Day, but my sweetie was feeling surprisingly unromantic about the prospect. "I'm not really in the mood for going someplace for an over-priced special menu dinner just because it's Valentine's Day so you have to go out and celebrate," she said. Or words to that effect.

Celebrate Day of the Dead — Día de los Muertos — in Minneapolis, St. Paul

Altar for Día de los Muertos at Mercado Central (Photo by Becky George)

If you could spend one more evening with your dearly departed relatives and friends, what would you serve them? What were their favorite foods? What did they like to drink? What kind of music did they listen to? What else could you do to make them feel welcome, to entice them to pause in their roaming across the earth and take an annual rest stop to eat, drink and be merry one more evening with their you? If you celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), these questions are urgent, since Mexican traditional beliefs dictate that your ancestors’ spirits will visit soon (typically November 1st and 2nd) and you must prepare an altar in your home to receive them.
