Nicollet Island

The Nicollet Island/East Bank neighborhood comprises Nicollet Island on the Mississippi River just east of downtown and the portion of the eastern riverbank located between Central Avenue and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad line.

The neighborhood is at the geographical and historical center of Minneapolis. The island is named for Joseph Nicollet, a scientist, geographer and mathematician born in Savoy, France. He led three expeditions through Minnesota, and authored the influential book Map of the Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi.

Hennepin Avenue East and First Avenue Northeast are two of the main roads that connect the island to the rest of Minneapolis. The island spans 47 acres, and all but two of the houses on the island date from 1864 to 1898.

The island is part of the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Zone.

MOVIES | MSP Latin Film Festival brings the best of Latino film to the Twin Cities

Over the past few months there seems to be a different film festival starting or ending every week in the Twin Cities.  I’m not complaining and I’ve enjoyed covering every one of them and checking out new films that have played at various international and U.S. film festivals over the past year or two and having the opportunity to see many of these films that perhaps otherwise may go unseen.

SlutWalk comes to Minneapolis

Changing the message from “don’t get raped” to “don’t rape” is at the heart of SlutWalk Minneapolis, an event that occurs next weekend, according to organizer Kimberia Sherva. On October 1, more than 600 people are expected to march across the Hennepin Avenue and Stone Arch bridges in solidarity against sexual violence, no matter what the victim happens to be wearing.

Introducing guerrilla gardening: A new Twin Cities movement, or just a fad?

We first saw the term guerrilla gardening popping up in our own backyard in 2009. Over in the United Kingdom, Richard Reynolds had been gardening "with or without permission" since 2004, encouraging people to simply beautify and make use of unused and uncolorful areas around the city, despite who owns it.
