The Harrison Neighborhood Association seeks an experienced and creative Director/Lead Organizer committed to building grassroots leaders, fostering cross-cultural relationships, maintaining and building partnerships, and able to share power. Ideal candidates will be experienced with community, an effective listener, and able to engage conflict constructively for the advancement of the neighborhood.
Harrison Neighborhood Association is a powerful resident driven community-based organization located in North Minneapolis. The HNA represents a diverse neighborhood of 3,200 people consisting of African Americans (39%), White (28%), Southeast Asians (17%), and Latino (9%). The Harrison Neighborhood Association annual budget is approximately $300,000 and employs 5 full-time and 1 part-time organizers. HNA has several resident developed organizing campaigns and program areas addressing community housing goals, environmental justice, transit equity, economic revitalization, and undoing racism.

The Harrison Neighborhood Association seeks a dedicated and experienced lead staff member capable of organizing, managing and building community power.
- Develop, support, and coordinate diverse leadership in an urban neighborhood to affect change in their community
- Increase awareness of, commitment to, and participation in a dynamic, grass-roots community organization advancing racial and economic equity
- Manage daily operation of the HNA office, ensure organizational goals are met, strengthen operating structures, and manage a staff of community organizers
- Lead fundraising efforts maintaining and expanding relationships with funders and diversifying HNA’s funding support
1. Board Development
- Build the capacity of a resident Board Members to identify issues, set goals, and develop strategy to advance community vision
- Insure coordination between the Board and committees so that they operate as an effective voice of residents, businesses, and property owners
- Facilitate Board members understanding of their roles and their ability to work together, including identifying training opportunities
- Reinforce organizational structure of HNA which is based on area representation
- Provide accurate and timely information as required by the Board’s decision making process
- Implement Board policies and goals
- Organize and staff meetings of the Board and the Executive Committee, works with Executive Committee to identify issues and set Board agendas
- Work with Board and standing committee members to make recommendations on fiscal, policy, procedural, and strategic concerns for the organization
2. Community/Professional Leadership
- Host neighborhood-wide planning, organize community meetings around neighborhood-side issues, and ensure resident ownership of all HNA projects
- Build the capacity and skills of Board members and other resident leaders to communicate with City and State agencies, neighborhood and community based organizations and elected officials.
- Increase HNA’s visibility and connections to residents, block clubs, organizations, government agencies, churches, and business, to develop new ideas about what HNA can be doing to improve the neighborhood and to increase the resources available for the neighborhood
- Represent the organization at community events and activities and build the capacity of resident leadership to do the same
- Insure ongoing communication with neighborhood leadership, motivate people to become/stay involved, and regularly meet with new/uninvolved members to receive feedback on HNA and increase members’ ownership of community improvement efforts
- Financial Duties — works with bookkeeper, Treasurer and designated committee to:
- Manages expenses, prepare monthly financial reports for the Board
- Implement sound financial policies and procedures
- Prepare grant proposals and reports
- Build capacity of HNA members to understand & participate in fundraising activities
- Develop and maintain relationships with funders
- Manage all contracts and prepare reports as necessary
- Personnel/Daily Management
- Provide leadership and guidance to HNA’s staff of community organizers, assisting with work plans, providing training, developing strategy, etc.
- Manage all personnel matters consistent with the HNA personnel policies
- Adhere to all legal requirements relative to personnel management
- Manage day-to-day operations of HNA
- 5-10 years experience with constituent based organizations, grassroots organizing, program management, community development, and/or issue advocacy
- Success working with community organizations and with their Boards in particular
- Experience building and working in coalitions, partnerships, and collaborative relationships
- Experience and/or knowledge regarding conflict management
- Excellent, demonstrable written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working in diverse communities
- Experience and skill managing staff and budgets
- Thorough knowledge, and experience with, community organizing
- Excellent inter-personal skills, experience with volunteers and with leadership development
- Successful experience with fundraising, particularly grant writing
- Experience with, and commitment to, community based planning
- Sense of humor
