Chill summer: Claire de Lune, Theresa Andersson, Chicha Libre

This spring, I've had to eat my words. For the past few years, I've been advising bands to skip the physical CDs and just send download links to journalists—the hard copies, I've said, get tossed in a pile that may or may not ever get excavated. Then last month I bought a car that has a working CD player, and lo and behold! Suddenly making it into that pile is the best way to get my attention. Some of the discs I've had to resist tossing straight out the window (Dwight Hobbes said it all when it comes to Paul Spring: I should've had a V8), but three have made for very chill soundtracks for warm-weather cruising.MORE »
The view from Crystal Bridges

BENTONVILLE, ARKANSAS—Surprises abound on the hills, in the gullies and across the streams of Benton County in northwestern Arkansas. Those surprises, uniquely enough, also generate whipsaw-like juxtapositions of the banal and extraordinary and challenge aesthetic compartmentalization and comprehension.MORE »
Art-a-Whirl and Tough Mudder make for a hot weekend

Art-A-Whirl happens this weekend in Northeast Minneapolis. If you’ve never been, you should plan on checking it out. If you like art and/or music, you will want to head over to see some bands at Psycho Suzi’s, Grumpy’s NE, The Sample Room, and the 331 Club; and check out all the open artists; studios and galleries all over the area. There is even an Art-a-Whirl edition of the Hotpants dance party on Saturday night. Usually some of the food trucks park themselves in Northeast to feed the hungry art-lovers. I’ll be checking Art-A-Whirl out on Saturday, since Sunday I will be watching people run around in the mud.MORE »

Redemption
“Harbor of Hope” is a seventy-three minute film about thirty thousand refugees from the concentration camps in Europe who arrived in Malmo Sweden in 1945. Red Cross boats brought them to the harbor and the citizens of Malmo found beds, in school buildings, in museums, in any public spaces that could be turned into hospitals.MORE »
America beyond the 2012 elections: What the candidates should be discussing
Groucho Marx was declared that any club that would have him as a member I would not want to join. His sentiment perhaps captures my attitude toward presidential candidates–anyone who wants to be president I would not want to support!MORE »
