Starting on June 27 and continuing through the next five days, many Somalis in Minnesota will celebrate the 49th anniversary of their country’s Independence Day. Officially July 1, the date commemorates the founding of the Republic of Somalia, as it gained freedom from colonial British and Italian rule in 1961. MORE »
REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK | Hmong Freedom Celebration and Sports Tournament
The 29th annual Hmong Freedom Celebration and Sports Tournament will be held this weekend in St. Paul at Como Park. Sponsored since its inception by Lao Family Community of Minnesota, one of the oldest Hmong organizations in Minnesota, the tournament draws Hmong from around the country and around the world and one of the highlights for Hmong living in Minnesota, along with Hmong New Year celebrations. ChuPheng Lee, the Vice President of Lao Family and Chairman of this year’s tournament, estimates that between 50,000 and 60,000 people will attend the tournament. MORE »
Hip-Hop Against Homophobia: The fight rages on
This weekend marks the next step in a Twin Cities movement to address homophobia in and through hip-hop. Building on the immense success of two previous events—including a packed show at the Nomad on a bitterly cold January night—Saturday night’s “Hip-Hop Against Homophobia, Volume 2” will take place at Bedlam Theatre. The mature-beyond-her-years 22-year-old, who traces her roots from Puerto Rico to the NuYorican Lower East Side to the West Side of St. Paul, is about to drop an album that expands her sonic palette yet continues to be grounded in messages of organizing and social justice. Heer commzz tha sunnn: At the Heliotrope Festival, experimentation is required
May 28-30 marks the sixth incarnation of the Heliotrope Festival, an event dedicated to expanding the ears and minds of Twin Cities audiences with some of the best underground and experimental music the region has to offer. The three-day event, which runs Thursday through Saturday and is organized by Flaneur Productions, will once again take place at the Ritz Theater in Northeast Minneapolis. MORE »
