MUSIC | Rock the Garden: 10,000 Decemberists fans can't be wrong
One couldn’t have asked for a better day for Rock the Garden, Saturday’s outdoor concert jointly sponsored by the Walker Art Center and the Current. The sun shone down brightly all day and inspired good cheer amongst the bands and audience alike. Nearly 10,000 packed the Walker’s grassy hillside for the show—which sold out quickly after tickets went on sale—drinking cool beers and getting suntans while Solid Gold, Yeasayer, Calexico, and the Decemberists played spirited sets. MUSIC | Grizzly Bear at the Cedar: Good music in the worst of conditions
There are few bands out there whose music is engaging enough to hold an audience’s attention even in the worst of conditions. Brooklyn quartet Grizzly Bear are just such a band, and on Sunday night their Cedar Cultural Center audience was definitely tested by the venue’s oven-like temperatures. The evening’s only solace from the heat was in the gorgeously tranquil electro-folk harmonies that swept through the audience like a refreshing draft of air. MUSIC | St. Vincent sands down the rough edges at First Ave
Brooklyn guitar virtuoso St. Vincent (Annie Clark) played First Avenue on Thursday night, touring in support of her recent album Actor. The evening’s audience was surprisingly sparse, considering that the new record has received a great deal of critical praise. Clark didn’t seem to mind, though, treating those who were there to an intimate and tranquil set. MORE »
DANCE | Black Label Movement on grass at the Southern Theater: Cult-like chanting, spastic motions, and animalistic chaos
Twin Cities dance company Black Label Movement sprang into their third season at the Southern Theater last Friday with the world premiere of artistic director Carl Flink’s Field Songs, a piece examining the effects of urban societies encroaching on rural ones. The production was conceived in collaboration with the BLM “movers,” with a great deal of on-the-spot improvisation. The result is that each performance is a completely unique experience. MORE »
